Grade 5-9-Rather than focusing solely on the subject's life on and off the court, Lipsyte examines M.J. the multimillion dollar commodity. He puts the Jordan phenomenon into historical perceptive, correlating the man's success with the rise in popularity of the N.B.A. and the changes in the style of the game over the years. In addition, he explores the relationship between athletics and the marketing of products. Jordan's latest career as a minor league baseball player is touched upon in the last few pages. While at times insightful, this book does have its drawbacks. For one thing, it is sure to disappoint the many readers who pick it up expecting more on Jordan's life and less philosophizing on the state of sports today. And even the philosophizing doesn't completely succeed; not all of the ideas are fully developed and the entire approach is somewhat disjointed. Lipsyte does avoid the over-awed, gee-whiz tone of many sports biographies, but he sometimes goes too far the other way and simply seems grumpy. The text is illustrated with black-and-white photographs of Jordan and other important figures in the history of basketball. Other biographies on this superstar are likely to have more appeal to young fans.

Robert Lipsyte's list of publications for young people isn't especially lengthy when compared to those of other authors who have been writing for the same length of time. But that's because writing books for and about teenagers isn't the only kind of writing he does, or the only kind of work he does, for that matter. Among other things, Robert Lipsyte has been a highly respected columnist and a prize-winning sports reporter for the New York Times, a correspondent for the CBS television program Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt, the host of his own award-winning television interview program, The Eleventh Hour, on New York City's public television station, and author of a television documentary series about sports. Most importantly, he is the author of The Contender, one of the very first realistic novels about contemporary teenagers and a book that has been required reading in many American schools for the past three decades. Recognizing the importance of that book as well as his other works, the American Library Association honored Robert Lipsyte with the Margaret A. Edwards Award in 2001. Mr. Lipsyte lives in New York, NY.

Michael Jordan

I chose to read a biography on Michael Jordan, a player who changed the game of basketball during a time of racial tensions still running high. The book follows Michael on his journey through high school, and touches on his childhood and teenage experience. Then follows him to college where he came in as an outspoken freshman and made an unbelievable shot to win a championship title for the team, and begin to make a name for himself in the world of basketball. Then came his journey to the pros. He was drafted into the NBA before he even finished college, despite his mothers wishes, and began playing for the heat. He was a great player from the start but the team he was on was not right for him, and his team mates began getting jealous of the shadow he was casting over the rest of the team. Then the team got a new coach who built the team up around Jordan and chose players based on specific skill sets, making the team a dynasty. Finally Nike gave him offers and he came out with his own shoe line, one of the top shoe lines ever created by an athlete.
Some major messages in the book were related to how basketball changed the racial stereotypes and tensions in early America. Black basketball players were seen as not having intelligence and only relying on natural abilities and instincts. Jordan changed these stereotypes with his game and even white people began to love him for his game.
One of the things I liked about the book was that it was easy to read, and crammed a lot of information about Jordan and the history of the game into a small reading. One thing I disliked was that the author really looked at political issues with a liberal slander and I am personally more conservative. If someone is interested in basketball as a game and how it was developed from a backyard and ghetto playground hobby into a multibillion dollar industry and how Michael Jordan contributed to this expansion then I would recommend this book to that person. I would overall rate this book a 3 out of 5 because it could have been more detailed and there were certain parts of the book that didn't make sense just because of the way the author worded the sections.
I personally liked this book because it was very interesting and I thought the author did a great job of showing how basketball impacted the racial tensions and problems that were going on at the same time the game was evolving. I think these tensions were important to the development of the book because they fueled the controversy of professional basketball in all respects, not just Jordan's play. If the races had been on good terms then the development of controversy would be non-existent and the play of many professionals that that influenced Jordan probably would have changed. If this would have been the case who knows where the world of professional basketball would be today.

Didn't have much about Jordan. Its was basically only about the history of Basketball. Pretty boring. YAWN. Im going to bed.

Applies to technologists in any field, and still relevant today

As an engineering graduate and a practicing consultant writing software for a living, I believe the message in this book applies to everyone that works with technology, not just the "hard" engineering subjects like civil, mechanical, chemical, aerospace, etc. Since technology now is all around us and an inescapable part of most jobs, crafts and hobbies, this book also may be worth reading by all tinkerers and DIYers.

I couldn't put down the book and came away wishing I had read it before I went to engineering school. All the arguments ring true for me and it was a joy to read. I'll certainly be passing my copy along to my nieces currently in high school.

intelligent, thoughtful essay

It is very well-written and well-thought-out. Florman presents a lucid, intelligent review of the historical trends in Engineering--both pros and cons.
Even though I am not an engineer in real life, I had once hoped to become one and have fantasized being a Vulcan Engineer in Star Trek sites. So, although I am not a professional engineer, I completely respect such qualified persons and feel that they are indeed among the prime movers of civilization.

A good book gone bad by a serious need of editing

The book covers a lot of territory. Jesse really tries to teach you a lot. Unfortunately, there are so many inconsistencies in the text and the code, that it becomes an exercise in chasing down bugs in the book. And it seems to get worse the farther into the book you go. I had to frequently refer to the code samples available for download to compare with the code I wrote and the code in the book. I got through it and have a working App, but I cannot recommend this book unless they fix the inconsistencies.

Very confusing!

I got this thinking it would be the same as the new update for Xcode
It might just be me so thought I am pretty good with computers but a lot of the stuff didn't match and it didn't explain a few small things properly in which case it leads to huge confusion later on
Find a different version of the book if possible

Steering homework in the palm of your hand!

I needed to have these books immediately which is one good thing about downloading Ebooks. The other thing is my tablet goes with me anywhere so I can read my homework comfortably wherever I need to be. The biggest PRO was that it was 50% cheaper than the books from the school bookstore. so I could spend more on tools for class!

Part of the "Discovering the Peoples of Michigan" series, Yankees in Michigan is a fascinating examination of the impact "Yankees" (as defined by their shared culture and sense of identity) had on the state of Michigan. As the ethnic label "Yankee" fell into disuse, the children of Yankees adapted the appellation "Midwesterner" instead. Chapters especially discuss the effect that Yankee immigration had on the Michigan frontier, and the industrialization of Michigan, among other subjects. Thoughtfully researched and engagingly presented by professor Brian C. Wilson, Yankees in Michigan is an excellent and worthy contribution to Michigan state history shelves.

this book has excellent info, turned out to be a revelation for me, growing up in central michigan, i didn't know how the yankees from new england created so much of the culture i grew up in. our attitudes, our way of doing thing. explained my family to me, in many ways. found it so interesting, i got a second copy for my counselor. i highly recommend this book.
