Mystery on the Field

It wasn't surprising that this book started off with Nancy and her friends going somewhere to relax and have fun. Nor was it surprising that Nancy stumbled on to a mystery. What was surprising though, was how the auther manage to work a mystery into a Baseball Game. I still get amazed at how Nancy Drew figures out all these complicated problems and still saves the day. This time it's to help a star pitcher find his little girl and still win a game. I've been reading Nancy Drew for over 9 years now and I think that this one was one of the best!

About the Author
Gene Luen Yang began drawing comic books in the fifth grade. In 1997, he received a Xeric Grant for Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks, his first comics work. He has since written and drawn a number of titles, including Level Up and Prime Baby.�American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel from First Second, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award.�He also won an Eisner for The Eternal Smile, a collaboration with Derek Kirk Kim.

Spoiler Free Review - mild content warning

My husband, my son, and I are all huge Avatar fans. Huge fans. This manga installment undertakes to answer one of the major hanging threads left at the end of the anime series, and as The Search gets underway, we get some surprising bits of back story and new insights on old favorites (or maybe not so favorites).

I really do not want to spoil this story for anyone and do not want to spoil the stories from the anime for anyone who might be just getting into the show, but, briefly, Zuko needs help with a family matter and enters a surprising alliance.

The book ends with an excellent cliffhanger.

Parents should be aware that in this book, there is kissing. And mild violence. And an issue that involves an implied sexual relationship.

Other than that, the book is well-written, beautifully drawn, and within reading/vocabulary/maturity levels of about 4th grade and up.

Picks up right where we left off...

FYI: I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley for purposes of review. (I read that one, and then went out the day it arrived in stores, bought a hard copy and read it again.)

Premise: The war is over, but bringing peace to the Four Nations isn't as simple as winning a battle. This is the continuing story of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I LOVE THIS. I loved this to pieces. This made me laugh and gasp and cry aloud. I love these characters, and this is completely in tone with the series: funny and sweet and heartbreaking.

It even starts by devoting three pages to the voiceover that opened every episode of the series, so it dropped me immediately into the right mindset for this world. I can hear the voice actors in my head. If you haven't seen Avatar: The Last Airbender, GO DO THAT. And then when you get to the end and want more, you're in luck!

The Promise interweaves some of the character moments we saw at the end of the last episode into the start of a new story, in which Zuko and Aang struggle with the Fire Nation colonies that were established in the Earth Kingdom during the war. It becomes a difficult question: what is the best thing to do, for those people who live there and for the Nations as a whole? How long have they been there? Are they Fire Nation citizens? Earth Kingdom citizens? What about the Earth Kingdom people who are angry, who lost people in the war, who want every Firebender gone? There are no easy answers for the characters.

There are plenty of great character moments, from an early conversation between Aang and Zuko that introduces the core emotional plot and had me right by the heartstrings, to the sweet moments showing the development of Aang and Katara's relationship. Toph and Sokka meanwhile maintain the right amount of comic relief to keep the tone on balance. Plenty of characters get at least a cameo, but there are occasional subtle words or references to keep the reader on track in case you forget who someone is.

You know the next element that's needed for Avatar: action! And this doesn't disappoint. The fight scenes are gorgeous: clear, dynamic, and inventive.

The art is beautiful throughout, in fact. Mostly just true to the series, although I especially liked the addition of Aang's prayer beads containing all the symbols of the elements, that he apparently uses to talk to the previous Avatars. The design work on that was beautifully done, and there are little elements to the art that I only noticed on a second look, little details that just enhance the whole.

This is a medium-short graphic novel at 76 Pages.

Be warned, this ends in a cliffhanger! And I have to wait until MAY for Part 2?

Shallow Story with Unrecognizable Characters, fails to live up to the animated series.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the best animated series that have ever been produced for television. While intended for, and accessible to, kids and preteens, the story and characters have a depth to them that has created a dedicated cult fanbase. People of all ages have become enamored of the series, from animation connoisseurs to followers of good action adventure. Although the live action movie adaptation failed to live up to its inspiration on many, many levels, the first official comic book continuation of the series looked to be in better hands. The series' original creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, were involved in creating the story, and the award-winning graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang was handling the scripting duties.

Sadly, "The Promise, Part 1" fails to live up to its pedigree in multiple ways. To detail why, I'll be spoiling much of the story below.

The animated series ended with the defeat of the conquest-happy Fire Nation, thanks to the combined efforts of Avatar Aang and his former enemy, the Firebender Zuko. Zuko was made Fire Lord in place of his evil father, and the pair were set to build a new, lasting peace in the wake of the war. "The Promise" looks at the first hurdle in this process, dealing the fate of the Fire Nation Colonies in the Earth Kingdom. At the very beginning of the story, we already see signs that "The Promise" is aiming far below the mark set by its predecessor. The animated series was careful to show that, while most of the plot and changes in the world were being driven by a handful of heroic individuals, the world they inhabited was both vast and complex. There were good and bad people on every side of the war, and much of the trouble was the result of people working at cross-purposes for one reason or another. While "The Promise" looks to focus on the political side of things, the complexity of the animated series' story is nowhere to be found. The original fate of the colonies is decided in a quick scene at the beginning of the comic, where everyone decides to give the colonies back to the Earth Kingdom after a five-minute conversation between the main cast. A full year passes before the effects of this decision are seen, when the colonists themselves strike back to declare that after a hundred years of war, they have created their own culture and don't wish to be split between the old Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom. Had the story focused on this aspect, I wouldn't have any complaints, but things are quickly side-tracked.

Much was made, in the animated series, of the characters of Aang and Zuko. The former was a gentle monk who resisted the call to kill the old Fire Lord, while the latter was an honorable atoner who wanted to do his best to repair the damage of his nation's war of conquest. Yet, the first conversation between these two in "The Promise" seem to depict vastly different characters. Zuko is obsessed with the idea that the stress of being Fire Lord will turn him as evil as his father, Ozai, was, even though the animated series clearly shows that Ozai was sick enough to be willing to kill his own firstborn in exchange for being named Crown Prince. Fire Lord Ozai poisoned his own people in order to feed his war machine, and was willing to burn the whole Earth Kingdom and commit genocide against its people, rather than deal with their rebellions. So Zuko asks Aang to kill him if he ever turns this evil, despite already demonstrating an ability tell right from wrong. In fact, this is the whole basis of Zuko's story arc in the animated series, as he discovers that his father and nation don't share his sense of honor, and ultimately sacrifices his station to fight against them. Aang, even though much was made in the animated series' epic finale of his reverence for life and belief that even the worst people should not be killed as an answer to their crimes, quickly agrees to this.

From there, the entire political plot of the colonies is turned into an excuse to create tension between Zuko and Aang, to the point that the plot tries to draw its suspense from the possibility that Aang will kill Zuko for his reluctance to forge ahead with their hastily-conceived plan to deport the colonists back to the Fire Nation. The characters take inexplicable action to make themselves look as bad as possible, rush into battle at perceived slights, and show a reluctance to talk things through. This aren't the characters from the animated series, who felt so real to fans that thousands of them waged passionate internet debates about their speculative love lives. These aren't the characters who impressed critics like Roger Ebert, and led them to decry the shallow recreations of them in M Night Shyamalan's live action adaptation.

Fans of the Avatar franchise, though, have probably already heard the details of the upcoming sequel series, "The Legend of Korra." Taking place a generation later, the basic premise of this new series has already spoiled the ending to "The Promise," letting readers know that without a doubt, the colony situation will be resolved and Aang will not kill Zuko. In fact, from all the details that have been released by such events as Nickelodeon's official San Diego Comic Con panel, once the two characters are no longer being twisted by this cash-in of a story, they quickly go back to being good friends who know how to work together.

Other problems with the book include tin-eared dialogue, short length that is made worse by fight-sequences that speed along across multiple pages without any tension, and art that seeks to copy the look of the original series without capturing the beauty and detail of the truly fantastic animation.

As a comic, "The Promise" is very much in the tradition of any number of licensed spin-offs, looking to make a quick buck off the popularity of the original property. Undiscerning fans will probably be pleased, but the wider audience created by "Avatar: The Last Airbender" will be greatly disappointed.

About the Author

THEODORE L. BROWN received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1956. Since then, he has been a member of the faculty of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he is now Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus. He served as Vice Chancellor for Research, and Dean of The Graduate College, from 1980 to 1986, and as Founding Director of the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology from 1987 to 1993. Professor Brown has been an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1972 he was awarded the American Chemical Society Award for Research in Inorganic Chemistry and received the American Chemical Society Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Inorganic Chemistry in 1993. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Chemical Society.

H. EUGENE LEMAY, JR., received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Pacific Lutheran University (Washington) and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1966 from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He then joined the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno, where he is currently Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus. He has enjoyed Visiting Professorships at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, at the University College of Wales in Great Britain, and at the University of California, Los Angeles. Professor LeMay is a popular and effective teacher, who has taught thousands of students during more than 40 years of university teaching. Known for the clarity of his lectures and his sense of humor, he has received several teaching awards, including the University Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award (1991) and the first Regents’ Teaching Award given by the State of Nevada Board of Regents (1997).

BRUCE E. BURSTEN received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1978. After two years as a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at Texas A&M University, he joined the faculty of The Ohio State University, where he rose to the rank of Distinguished University Professor. In 2005, he moved to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Professor Bursten has been a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Teacher-Scholar and an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow, and he is a Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society. At Ohio State he has received the University Distinguished Teaching Award in 1982 and 1996, the Arts and Sciences Student Council Outstanding Teaching Award in 1984, and the University Distinguished Scholar Award in 1990. He received the Spiers Memorial Prize and Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2003, and the Morley Medal of the Cleveland Section of the American Chemical Society in 2005. He was President of the American Chemical Society for 2008. In addition to his teaching and service activities, Professor Bursten’s research program focuses on compounds of the transition-metal and actinide elements.

CATHERINE J. MURPHY received two B.S. degrees, one in Chemistry and one in Biochemistry, from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1986. She received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1990. She was a National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the California Institute of Technology from 1990 to 1993. In 1993, she joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina, Columbia, becoming the Guy F. Lipscomb Professor of Chemistry in 2003. In 2009 she moved to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, as the Peter C. and Gretchen Miller Markunas Professor of Chemistry. Professor Murphy has been honored for both research and teaching as a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow, a Cottrell Scholar of the Research Corporation, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award winner, and a subsequent NSF Award for Special Creativity. She has also received a USC Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award, the USC Golden Key Faculty Award for Creative Integration of Research and Undergraduate Teaching, the USC Michael J. Mungo Undergraduate Teaching Award, and the USC Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. Since 2006, Professor Murphy has served as a Senior Editor for the Journal of Physical Chemistry. In 2008 she was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Professor Murphy’s research program focuses on the synthesis and optical properties of inorganic nanomaterials, and on the local structure and dynamics of the DNA double helix.

PATRICK M. WOODWARD received B.S. degrees in both Chemistry and Engineering from Idaho State University in 1991. He received a M.S. degree in Materials Science and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Oregon State University in 1996. He spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physics at Brookhaven National Laboratory. In 1998, he joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department at The Ohio State University where he currently holds the rank of Professor. He has enjoyed visiting professorships at the University of Bordeaux in France and the University of Sydney in Australia. Professor Woodward has been an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow and a National Science Foundation CAREER Award winner. He currently serves as an Associate Editor to the Journal of Solid State Chemistry and as the director of the Ohio REEL program, an NSF-funded center that works to bring authentic research experiments into the laboratories of first- and second-year chemistry classes in 15 colleges and universities across the state of Ohio. Professor Woodward’s research program focuses on understanding the links between bonding, structure, and properties of solid-state inorganic functional materials.

MATTHEW W. STOLTZFUS received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Millersville University in 2002 and his Ph. D. in Chemistry in 2007 from The Ohio State University. He spent two years as a teaching postdoctoral assistant for the Ohio REEL program, an NSF-funded center that works to bring authentic research experiments into the general chemistry lab curriculum in 15 colleges and universities across the state of Ohio. In 2009, he joined the faculty of Ohio State where he currently holds the position of Chemistry Lecturer. In addition to lecturing general chemistry, Stoltzfus accepted the Faculty Fellow position for the Digital First Initiative, inspiring instructors to offer engaging digital learning content to students through emerging technology. Through this initiative, he developed an iTunes U general chemistry course, which has attracted over 120,000 students from all over the world. Stoltzfus has received several teaching awards, including the inaugural Ohio State University 2013 Provost’s Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer and he is recognized as an Apple Distinguished Educator.

In Part III Hui-yu Caroline Ts’ai provides a more in-depth analysis of wartime integration policies and the mobilization of labor before making an evaluation of Japan’s colonial legacy.

.History Built in 1939 as the residence for Otani Kozui, the 22nd Abbot of the Nishi Hongagji, a Japanese sub-sect of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, Siaoyaoyuan contains architectural aesthetic features typical to the Japanese colonial period. The juxtaposition of Japanese and western styles and elements bears certain significance in the architectural history, and profound potential for further building reuse, while the building itself serves as a testimony to the humanitarian and cross-era evolution, hence its cultural and historical value.
Otani Kozui was famous with a high ranking status in religion and for expeditions. He was also related to the royal family by the marriage of his sister to the Emperor, and involved at a senior level in decision making in Taiwan’s then Japanese-ruled parliament, between 1940 and 1948. In 1940, the construction of Siaoyaoyuan was completed, with its purpose of use outlined as below:
1. To serve as Otani Kozui’s training base for Taiwan’s agricultural development and education of his disciples,
2. To serve as Otani Kozui’s summer residence and writing studio during his governmental dispatch to Taiwan,
3. To serve as Nishi Hongagji’s auxiliary office in southern Taiwan,
4. To turn Kaohsiung into Taiwan’s critical gateway to the south-east Asia.
I. The Exterior:
With a pronounced emphasis on its living functionalities, the building follows the spatial construction logic of Japanese-style wooden structure, its line of movement tracing the exposed-externally reinforced concrete staircase, with an interior staircase leading into the public area.
Terraces were built to fill up small crammed space wherever necessary, for instance, on the east side of the building. The wood-paved terraces are of exquisite aesthetics in design and serve such architectural purpose as connecting all living spaces. The tiles for the roof are refined black tiles from the Hosing Kiln.
II. The Interior:
1. The building contains the characteristics of traditional Japanese residence, with no visually centric space such as a built-in courtyard,
2. The entire space was divided into three major compartments: social area for guest entertainment, service area and a lounge area (which is the part of Siaoyaoyuan recorded as the historical building today). The lounge connects with exterior space by a side corridor-cum-foyer.
3. Because of Otani Kozui’s status in the royal family and his experience of overseas studies, the interior decoration and design for both of the lounge area and guest reception exhibits an interesting Western-and-Japanese fusion.

For what?

In my opinion overly general information. No algorithms or methods of implementation, even at a high level or schematic. Got it as required reading for a course. 3rd edition is essentially same for real purposes. OK for getting some paper (degree) to advance a bureaucratic or other career, but not really for anything useful. Doesn't mean sales shouldn't be good with AHCA creating a new army of the aforementioned.

I'm happy to share my thoughts on the book, Men Cry In The Dark, written by Michael Baisden. With the many issues we face between striving to establish a life for ourselves and our families, this book has the components of the all too real modern day issues, wrapped in an entertaining story line. One stand out personality is of the charismatic character, Derrick, who fulfills the role of the eye-catching corporate employee turned businessman. As an adored single parent, Tony possesses the special qualities of an overall nice guy who's constantly being challenged by his bitter ex, Valerie. As one who roots his current interests based on previous negative experiences, Mark chooses to date all races but his own. Through his demonstrated anger, unforgiveness and resentment we learn how one's mindset can ultimately lead them down an unexpected path based on the past. No matter what character you most relate to, Michael Baisden shares a straightforward view of relationships that many of us experience, but not often enough take the time to step back and review. Through sharing the journey of these characters, we relate to our own choices. Over the years, my friends and I have opened up many discussions based on the many issues presented in this book, and I will continue to use it as a topic-starter for more fun, yet inspiring dialogues to come. I most recommend this book as a tool to help encourage the discussion of not only what we relate to and why, but what motivates us to learn how to move on in a healthy and profitable way.

Very disappointing!!!!!

This book is a quick read as it keeps you wondering what happens next. But sadly it has a lot of stereotypical themes that I am tired of reading about....sex crazed cheating self absorbed men, money hungry back stabbing women, European standards of beauty, historians...... you get my point? The book has few redeeming qualities if any. The author could have been more creative in his writing and less vulgar
with his language. Nothing memorable about this book.

There is definitely a story here and this book left me hungry for more of Mr. Baisden's books. I said to myself, "he can do better than this."

I had a hard time following the story and getting into it at first and just when I was all into it and was like, yeah I freakin' knew it!, it was over. I was left hanging. Really dude you just left me hanging like that?

I wanted more!! There's something so real about his characters and their stories I just knew there was something he was holding back.

So downloaded and am now reading, "The Maintenance Man, Collectors Edition" it captured my attention page one!! Thought provoking, deep, and real. You don't know whether to love the men or hate them. A relationship eye opener between both friends and lovers. Great sentiment and a Great read! It'll open your mind.

I'm looking forward to reading his entire collection.

Historical ROMANCE, not historical fiction

Fans of truly well-researched historical fiction in the Sharon Kay Penman mold will recognize that this is an important difference. This is a recycled boy-meets-girl plot (they're kept apart by a series of contrivances! but DESTINY, etc.!) with history loosely superimposed on it. The characters exist only to further the romance, so they're all one-dimensional (the villain, the busybody, the doting father), and keeping track of so many characters with so few distinguishing characteristics gets to be more trouble than it's worth by the time the completely predictable ending rolls around.

Enjoyable historical fiction of a fabled relationship

Fascinating story based in the history of India's Mughal Empire. The story is about Mehrunnisa, daughter of a poor Persian who comes to the empire to make his fortune. She meets the son of Emperor Akbar (third of the Mughal) prince Salim when eight, and falls in love with him on his wedding day, and decides that someday, she will become his wife. Through brief encounters, Salim becomes fascinated with her, much to the disapproval of his powerful third wife, Jagat Gosain. The novel then follows Mehrunnisa's marriage to another Persian —a decorated soldier in Akbar's army, the rebellions of Salim against Akbar (where her husband betrays Salim), the reconciliation between father and son, and Salim's rise to power as Emperor Jahangir. Like his father, Salim's eldest son rebels, with the help of Mehrunnisa's husband. We also see how Jagat Gosain works to prevent Mehrunnisa and Salim from being together. Ultimately, however, it is the story of how, throughout the years, she held a power over him that no other in his harem of 19 wives and hundreds of concubines held over him.

Sundaresan creates a wonderful, vivid picture of the world of late 16th to early 17th Century India. The vastness of the Mughal Empire, the climate and customs of the period, the variety of it's people, and the complexity of the politics of the time are woven together to create an engaging story. There was a nice balance between providing the details and terms while not reading like a textbook explaining every term and custom. All of the main characters were distinct, and fully realized — each with their own voice and behaviors, letting me sink into the story despite my unfamiliarity with the setting - historical and cultural.

I look forward to reading the two following books by Sundaresan - the next dealing with Mehrunnisa's rise to be the premier wife, and the power behind the thrown. I always enjoy reading about the unconventional women of history.

I am really torn about the three stars. When I was reading, I was thinking it was a four star novel. When I reached the end, I was convinced that I would only give it two. This novel was intriguing from the beginning and kept me interested throughout. The problem is that no one can write a complete story these days. Everything has to be a trilogy. So you read the story, waiting for when the protagonist marries the emperor. As soon as she does, it ENDS. Abruptly. Without warning, or even a gentle winding down. There is not even a cliffhanger or an enigma. It simply is... and then it isn't. I found this maddening and artless, from an author who had already demonstrated that she is capable of very good storytelling. I am so mad at having to buy another book to continue, as if it was a serial, and I feel so cheated by the publisher, that I may not read the next book at all.
