Grey (Storm's Soldiers MC Book 2), by Paige Notaro

MEAGAN:
I see him for what he is now - the worst kind of guy imaginable. As if being a biker weren't enough, he's in with racists too?

What a damn fool I was letting him in so deep. Why? Just cause he was hot.

And cause he treated me well.

And cause he whispered sweet things to me.

Cause we were winding together, closer and faster than with any other guy I've ever been with before.

He doesn't deserve to be in my life. I know that.

So why can't I let him go…

VAUGHN:
The truth had to come out sometime. What we had could never last. I had my fun, tried what I should have never had. Now, I'm free again.

But I don't want freedom. I want her.

I can fix this. She's not too far gone to see there's more than just fireworks between us. Winning her will cost me though. The Soldiers will never let us be. There will come a day of reckoning.

It's more than that. I can't be who I was and who she makes me want to be.

But I’m damn well gonna try.

Grey features sizzling romance, steamy sexual situations and some racial language. Mature and open-minded audiences only. This book is not meant to be read as a standalone and is a bestseller, Black and White . Book 3 in the series, Clear, is now out.

Nothing is ever black and white in life
By SEB
Book 2: A white supremist biker and a black college student/waitress who meet and develop an extreme attraction to each other, despite the color of their skin and his racist club's beliefs.
Each one has a story to tell about why they are who they are...and together they try to make a change...him with his attitude about all races that aren't his own and she, convincing herself (and her brother) that he is not a "monster".
I liked the relationship these two had and although at times it was a bit predictable and preachy, it was different and had a good message.
It was not so much an MC book as much as it was a book about race and the messed up mind set of these radical groups...and of course a love story between two people from opposite worlds.
An abusive EX boyfriend, various meddling friends, some unforgiving "brothers" and a tragic loss of family all make up the rest of this book.
Different and hopeful, although this type of story has been done before. Some editing and spelling errors that made me have to re-read to figure out who was talking, but otherwise a pretty good story.

**** 3.5 **** "black and white make a beautiful world" star

VAUGHN!!!
By Amazon Customer
Vaughn, Vaughn, Vaughn. He can't seem to catch a break. He genuinely loves Meagan but seems to put his foot in his mouth. He says something out of anger and while protecting her and now he back in the hot seat. I love how her brother and him seemed to look past their differences and actually get along. I also like how Paige wrote his mother in as a way of showing that she accepted his relationship with Meagan. I just hope that the two of them can get past this. Rico need to get his life. But I hoping for the best.Vaughn seems like a man that doesn't really know who he is yet which is understandable because he is so young and is surrounded by the hate. Great read though.Need more soon.

Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.

The field of the sociology of religion remains rich and bountiful. Fortunately the quality of researchers is higher than ever, with many bright and well-trained young social scientists joining the ranks eager to make contributions to their chosen field. It is exciting and invigorating to be part of this surge of interest and effort.

As we observe both the many developments and events within societies that have religion as a core ingredient, and as we read the increasing amount of solid research and theorizing in the sociology of religion, it is clear that this seventh edition has a deep reservoir to plumb. Accordingly we have added a significant amount of new material as well as expanded the treatment of subjects that had already been introduced in earlier editions (and we dropped a few pages also). We present a summary below.

  • Included rational choice theory as a major contribution to understanding religion's role and function in society, particularly as rational choice theory deals with the secularization hypothesis, but also as rational choice theory clarifies our understanding of several other substantive issues.
  • Expanded the discussion of cults outside Western societies: one in Uganda (Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God), one in China (The Falun Gong), and one in Afghanistan (Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda).
  • Brings readers up to date on the continuing internal conflicts in the Southern Baptist Convention and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
  • Included a new discussion of interreligious conflict in Asia: Hindu-Muslim, Muslim-Christian, Hindu-Christian, and Hindu-Muslim-Sikh.
  • Updated U.S. Supreme Court cases through 2002 and added discussion of church-state cases reaching the courts concerning public school prayer, school vouchers for religious schools, and the removal of the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • Added a substantial new section on the Third World Islamist Movement as a politico-religious movement, including recent history, the concept of Jihad, and the emergence of al Qaeda, also noting relevant theology and parallels in the Christian tradition.
  • Expanded the section on Islamic Fundamentalism in several manifestations as well as its relationship to terrorism originating in the Middle East.
  • Included 2000 U.S. Census data on growth in the ranks of female clergy, discussed the ordination of the first female Orthodox Jewish rabbi, expanded and updated discussion of enrollment of women at both Protestant and Catholic theological schools, and applied rational choice theory to my predictions about additional denominations deciding to ordain women.
  • Described some recent movement within the black church away from the sect end of the church-sect continuum and made two applications of rational choice theory to African American religion.
  • Added a major new section on non-Western religions to the discussion of denominationalism in the United States—Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism—with an emphasis on changed patterns of immigration from Asia.
  • Provided current data (2000) showing dramatic differences in membership gains and losses among "higher tension" and "lower tension" religious groups.
  • Included a substantial discussion of challenges to Catholic teachings and authority by laypersons, with emphasis on the disenchantment of many with respect to papal pronouncements on birth control and the American priestly pedophilia scandal.
  • Retained the concept of secularization as differentiation and incorporated an application of rational choice theory to that concept and also included an important modification and clarification of secularization theory by Mark Chaves.
  • Updated the discussion of ecumenism and described the death and rebirth of the Consultation on Church Union (COCU) in 2001.
  • The number, structure, and sequence of chapters have remained the same as in the sixth edition. Part I (Chapters 14) is an introduction to the sociological perspective on religion. It grapples with the problem of defining religion, considers the fascinating but ultimately unanswerable question of the origins of religion, and focuses on sociology's distinctive perspective on religion as a social phenomenon. Part II (Chapters 5-6) looks closely at the classic churchsect continuum of religious organization and evolution and considers how conflict figures so commonly in the life of religious organizations. Part III (Chapters 7-11) examines the relationship of religion to major social institutions and structural features of society; religion and politics; religious fundamentalism; religion and the economy; religion and social class; and, finally, religion and the role and perception of women in society. Part IV (Chapters 12-15) covers some of the major features of religion in the United States-the social environment and experience of a majority of the readers of this text. After exploring several highly important sociohistorical developments within American religion, the chapters in Part IV pay particular attention to American socioreligious developments, namely, the African American church, Native American religion, and the phenomenon of denominationalism. Part IV concludes by focusing on primary sociological factors that will significantly affect the future of religion.

This edition retains the book's focus on grounding the sociological study of religion in basic sociological concepts, structures, and theory that demonstrate religion's status as a major social institution that is in constant social interaction and reciprocation with other institutions. As such, religion adapts and evolves in response to challenges and changes within the society in which it operates. Throughout it all religion provides a wide range of choices as people look for answers, encouragement, comfort, and hope.

I want to express sincere appreciation to my brother, Doug, for important and timely information; to Edie Riker, production editor, for answering all my questions and giving good and timely advice throughout the process; and to my wife, Arline, for her steadfastness in tolerating my single-mindedness in putting together yet another edition.

    Review
"You all know my love for Melanie Moreland's work and I absolutely loved The Contract." ---Mystical Lit Lounge

    About the Author
Melanie Moreland lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-seven-plus years. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them. Known as the quiet one with the big laugh, Melanie works at a local university and for its football team. Her job, while demanding, is rewarding as she cheers on her team to victory. While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys travelling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip. Melanie delights in a good romance story with some bumps along the way, but is a true believer in happily ever after. When her head isn’t buried in a book, it is bent over a keyboard, furiously typing away as her characters dictate their creative storylines to her, often with a large glass of wine keeping her company.

    Richard and Katy
    By Lisa
This was my first time reading this author Melanie Moreland, I must say pleasantly surprised. This book was awesome. Richard and Katy were quite a pair. They both had terrible childhoods, but we're really good people. They were funny, emotional and good actors (lol). I love a book with an ending and I'm not left wondering. Thank you.

    By Melanie Moreland

Richard, an high-flying advertising exec, an unrepentant tyrant to everyone around him, a man who despises everyone, especially his personal assistant, Katy. Katy, an all-suffering assistant, perfect at her job but unable to put her far too demanding boss in his place. She puts up with behavior that would have me telling my boss where to stuff it and send me running to Human Resources. But she has a reason for tolerating Richard’s attitude, an aunt with Alzheimer’s Disease, whose care Katy pays for. She can’t afford to be fired or to quit. Who’d ever dream these two opposites could ever fall in love?

When he doesn’t receive a coveted promotion, Richard decides to try to get a job at the only other major firm in the area. The problem is that the firm’s owner is family-oriented and would never hire Richard, due to his lack of stable personal relationships. Richard has to come up with a plan. Find a fianc, a fake fianc, and make the owner of the new firm believe it’s real. Who does he know who can fill the role? A woman who is loved by all who meet her, who can charm everyone, and is just the type to make anyone believe the romance is real? Katy, of course.

For Katy, this contract will help her support her aunt and improve the care her aunt receives. It will lighten the heavy burden of always trying to find the money to pay for the care. She despises Richard, but she can tolerate anything for a year, right?

So begins this wonderful story. Enemies, become friends, and then, maybe more. This sort of plot may have been done before, but never so well as in this delightful book by Melanie Moreland. The character development is believable in such a way, that I went from disliking Richard to adoring him, and from sort of sneering at Katy for putting up with him, to applauding the way she can take him on outside the job front, and put him in his place. The gradual change in their relationship took the exact right amount of time, not too fast, not too drawn out. We see it happen in ways that work absolutely, in ways I could see it happening with real people.

I love lots of characters in books, never content with just the two main protagonists, and this book has plenty of fun characters to satisfy me. The big engaging family who runs the new firm are delightful, people I’d love to know. They make the story better, as they interact with Richard and Katy. They help make this lovely romance richer and deeper with extra little details that, for me, take a story from good to great.

I’ve been reading Melanie’s work for a number of years now, and the contract is absolutely my favorite so far. She makes me want to smack Richard, then hug him. She makes me want to tell Katy to stand up to him, then applaud when she does. She makes me laugh, makes me angry, makes me smile. Everything a great story should make you feel. And she reminds me, as I’ve become cynical and scorn most romances, that love stories can still be wonderful things to read. I give my highest recommendation to The Contract. I only wish it could have gone on longer, because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters.

    Saving Richard VanRyan
    By Smusic F. Reader
What makes you love the hero in a romance novel? Is it his sweet and caring nature? His big heart? His compassion? Well scratch that! You won't get that from Richard VanRyan. At least not in the beginning of The Contract, the newest book by the talented Melanie Moreland. In fact, you may actually hate him and find him utterly undeserving of love, especially from the loyal, efficient, and compassionate Katharine Elliot. Regardless of all the reasons you can find to hate him, you find things that make you root for him to find love. I, myself, am a sucker for the damaged hero who is reformed by the love of a good woman. It just wasn't always clear that I would feel that way about Richard. He can make the Grinch look like a lapdog.

His world before Katharine was all about the "WIIFM" (what's in it for me?). He is arrogant, conceited, a bully, and deserving of the nickname form men named Richard. By contrast, Katharine is efficient, compassionate, loyal, and sweet. Some may think she is the resident doormat since she always meets the demands of her arrogant boss despite the vile insults he throws her way. However, once you get to know her, and her backstory, you realize that she is one of the strongest female characters you find in romance novels. She has reasons why she just grins and bear it when it comes to her job. She needs her job, she needs the salary it provides to her, and for strictly altruistic reasons. So bring it on Dick! You cannot break this girl!

When a situation arises that forces Richard to reluctantly rely on Katharine's good nature, she agrees. However, more of her backbone and strength shines through, and she throws him for a loop. She is not your doormat Richard! In fact, she has no problem in telling him off in what became my favorite line for the whole book..."That's it! You want to (beep) someone? Go (beep) yourself, VanRyan!"

Eventually we see great changes in Richard. Once you hear his back story, you understand why he is this way. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't excuse his behavior, but it explains it. You come to realize what he does. He needs Katharine Elliot to show him unconditional love. He needs the Gavins to give him a strong dose of family values. He needs Penny to show him that some things in life are worth all the stuff you have to endure. (Want to know who things other characters are? Go buy the book! You will not be disappointed!)

I absolutely love this story! I have read and love other stories by Melanie Moreland (especially Over the Fence) but there is just something about this story that puts it above the rest. Is it the evolution of Richard? The redemption of Richard? The strong love that develops out of nothing at all? Yes! Yes it is! All that and much, much more! Buy this book today. It is a must read that you won't put down until you finish!

The Story of Indian Business: The East India Company: The World's Most Powerful Corporation, by Tirthankar Roy

A first-time account of the East India Company from the perspective of Indian business history....

For over 200 years, the East India Company was the largest and most powerful mercantile firm in Britain and Asia. Set up to procure Asian goods for British consumers, the Company's business network spanned Persia, India, China, Indonesia, and North America. In the late 1700s, its career took a dramatic turn as the Company lost ground as a trading firm, but founded an empire in India. Why did a merchant firm end up being an empire builder? Why did politics mesh so closely with the conduct of business in this time?

This new account of the East India Company answers these questions by taking a fresh look at the world of Indian business. The story fits together many pieces of a vast jigsaw puzzle, and shows how trading in India changed the Company and how the Company changed Indian business.

Good one but a lot of economic jargons which is understandable considering the genre of the book.
Anyways a good perspective on The East India Company without digressing into the arena of British Rule of India!

Everywhere hailed as a masterpiece of historical adventure, this enthralling narrative recounts the experiences of twelve American sailors who were shipwrecked off the coast of Africa in 1815, captured by desert nomads, sold into slavery, and subjected to a hellish two-month journey through the bone-dry heart of the Sahara. The ordeal of these men - who found themselves tested by barbarism, murder, starvation, death, dehydration, and hostile tribes that roamed the desert on camelback - is made indelibly vivid in this gripping account of courage, brotherhood, and survival.

    Amazon.com Review
Some stories are so enthralling they deserve to be retold generation after generation. The wreck in 1815 of the Connecticut merchant ship, Commerce, and the subsequent ordeal of its crew in the Sahara Desert, is one such story. With Skeletons on the Zahara: A True Story of Survival, Dean King refreshes the popular nineteenth-century narrative once read and admired by Henry David Thoreau, James Fenimore Cooper, and Abraham Lincoln. King’s version, which actually draws from two separate first person accounts of the Commerce's crew, offers a page-turning blend of science, history, and classic adventure. The book begins with a seeming false start: tracing the lives of two merchants from North Africa, Seid and Sidi Hamet, who lose their fortunes—and almost their lives—when their massive camel caravan arrives at a desiccated oasis. King then jumps to the voyage of the Commerce under Captain Riley and his 11-man crew. After stops in New Orleans and Gibraltar, the ship falls off course en route to the Canary Islands and ultimately wrecks at the infamous Cape Bojador. After the men survive the first predations of the nomads on the shore, they meander along the coast looking for a way inland as their supplies dwindle. They subsist for days by drinking their own urine. Eventually, to their horror, they discover that they have come aground on the edge of the Sahara Desert. They submit themselves, with hopes of getting food and water, as slaves to the Oulad Bou Sbaa. After days of abuse, they are bought by Hamet, who, after his own experiences with his failed caravan (described at the novels opening), sympathizes with the plight of the crew. Together, they set off on a hellish journey across the desert to collect a bounty for Hamet in Swearah. King embellishes this compelling narrative throughout with scientific and historical material explaining the origins of the camel, the market for English and American slaves, and the stages of dehydration. He also humanizes the Sahrawi with background on the tribes and on the lives of Hamet and Seid. This material, doled out in sufficient amounts to enrich the story without derailing it makes Skeletons on the Zahara a perfectly entertaining bit of history that feels like a guilty pleasure. --Patrick O'Kelley

    From Publishers Weekly
When the American cargo ship Commerce ran aground on the northwestern shores of Africa in 1815 along with its crew of 12 Connecticut-based sailors, the misfortunes that befell them came fast and hard, from enslavement to reality-bending bouts of dehydration. King's aggressively researched account of the crew's once-famous ordeal reads like historical fiction, with unbelievable stories of the seamen's endurance of heat stroke, starvation and cruelty by their Saharan slavers. King (Patrick O'Brian: A Life Revealed), who went to Africa and, on camel and foot, retraced parts of the sailors' journey, succeeds brilliantly at making the now familiar sandscape seem as imposing and new as it must have been to the sailors. Every dromedary step thuds out from the pages with its punishing awkwardness, and each drop of brackish found water reprieves and tortures with its perpetual insufficiency. King's leisurely prose style rounds out the drama with well-parceled-out bits of context, such as the haggling barter culture of the Saharan nomadic Arabs and the geological history of Western Africa's coastline. Zahara (King's use of older and/or phonetic spellings helps evoke the foreignness of the time and place) impresses with its pacing, thoroughness and empathy for the plight of a dozen sailors heaved smack-hard into an unknown tribalism. By the time the surviving crew members make it back to their side of civilization, reader and protagonist alike are challenged by new ways of understanding culture clash, slavery and the place of Islam in the social fabric of desert-dwelling peoples. From Booklist
This shipwreck-and-survival saga occurred in 1815 in the wind-tortured territory of the modern Western Sahara and was promptly written down by American brigantine captain James Riley. So popular it appeared in six different editions, Riley's account is revived here with the benefit of author King's journey to retrace, in part, the 800-mile desert trek of Riley and his shipwrecked crew. King provides animated descriptions of the desert environment while covering the events Riley related, which included being sold into slavery. The dramatic incidents are supported with relevant details, such as the way the body reacts to dehydration and sun poisoning. Perhaps the story's most intriguing element is the mutual understanding that developed between Riley and his eventual master, Sidi Hamet. A debt Hamet owed to his father-in-law propels the entire drama, as Hamet spirits his slaves through lands of scimitar-swinging brigands for ransoming to a Western consul. This is both a forcefully visceral and culturally astute account. Gilbert Taylor

    Desert Heroism
    By Rob Hardy
As a boy, Abraham Lincoln read the memoir of Captain James Riley, and never forgot its story of slavery in the Sahara (or Zahara, as Riley would have known it). Thoreau knew the book. It was an international bestseller, and it might have been one of the few books besides the Bible in some American homes. Riley was a legend in his own time, but no longer is in ours. He is back, brought to us by Dean King, who read Riley's memoir of his adventure in the Sahara, and then read a narrative of the same adventure from a fellow crewman of Riley's, and then himself traveled in the still inhospitable and dangerous regions described in the two books. King has produced _Skeletons on the Zahara: A True Story of Survival_ (Little, Brown), a wonderful account of fortitude under the most extreme conditions at sea and on the desert. This is one of the great adventure stories, full of the tortures by man and nature, and of course of the success of an indomitable spirit.
Captain Riley and his "good Yankee crew" of eleven left Connecticut for an ordinary merchant voyage in 1815, and eventually foundered on the west coast of the Sahara, six hundred miles south of Morocco. They were beset by hostile, thieving nomads, but briefly escaped by taking to sea in the ship's longboats. They were eager to be away from the Sahara, which everyone knew was a realm of death but which was at the time uncharted, mysterious, and full (so the stories went) of cannibals. They ran out of provisions at sea and were forced to make for Sahara land south of Bojador, and their prospects were just as bad. Other tribesmen captured them, took their goods, and made them slaves. There are many pages devoted here to pain, extreme sunburn, thirst, hunger and other travails. The means of relieving these tortures are often unpleasant to contemplate as well; the way the captors and crew made do eating unmentionable parts of camels as well as snails and locusts are detailed here. Riley's eventual captor was a desert merchant Sidi Hamet, who was in financial trouble. Riley assured Hamet that he had important friends at the British consulate, hundreds of miles away. He insisted that these friends would buy him and the crew back for a high price. Of course, there were no such friends, and Riley was bluffing; Hamet insisted that if the ransom price was not paid, he would slit Riley's throat, and perhaps he was bluffing as well.
The hapless Riley and the hapless Hamet make the core of this tale, and King cannot be faulted that his source narratives don't have enough details to describe Hamet fully. He emerges, however, as a friend and savior, even if he was initially only after the ransom. Riley could not have known it, but there was indeed a procedure for ransoming slaves, and a British consular official made it happen, becoming Riley's lifelong friend. A measure of the two months in captivity is that Riley normally weighed 240 pounds, and when he was ransomed he weighed less than ninety. Not all of his crew made it back, and some of them may have spent the rest of their lives as slaves. King's exciting and surprising narrative ends with the speculation that Riley may even have had an effect on his own country's slave trade. He became an active abolitionist, easily able to discuss the immorality of slavery; and perhaps since Lincoln admired Riley's book, it may have done its little part to bring emancipation about.

    An instant favorite
    By Cort W. Hayhurst
I was first attracted to this book after reading a review in the Smithsonian magazine. The original story was apparently one of the most influential books of Abraham Lincoln's youth. I was also intrigued by the location in which the story took place, Morocco, where I had spent two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer on the border with Algeria. The story was rich with the descriptions of a sailor's life and the hardships of shifting to a struggle for survival in the desert of the Sahara. I had some experience with nomads and Touaregs in the Sahara and was amazed at how King's descriptions of nomadic lifestyles and customs of 200 years ago are still alive today.
It's probably apparent by now that I am not a book reviewer, this is my first review. In fact I don't read much any more as I am usually disappointed and quit before finishing most books. This book, however, was one which I could not put down. It is a work that I must place at the top of my all time favorites.

    Real survivors
    By Lynn Harnett
In 1815 a New England merchant brig foundered in rocky seas off North Africa. Its crew survived though perhaps they later wished they hadn't.
In the first days, hostile nomads drove them to escape back to the sea in a small boat with a broken oar only to suffer such dehydration and starvation that even enslavement by the dreaded nomads seemed preferable - until it happened.
After a slow, thoughtful start laying out the background of the men and the voyage, Dean's story of the crew's ordeal reads like a runaway suspense thriller with torture. And it's well written and chock full of information you didn't know you needed - the camel, for instance, is an astonishing physical specimen, a creature with a face built for sandstorms; an animal that doesn't sweat or pant, but stores its heat for the cold nights when it becomes a kind of living stove.
Dean's book is based largely on two firsthand accounts - one by ship's captain James Riley, and another by crewman Archibald Robbins. Dean also retraced much of Riley's trek, and his selected bibliography is lengthy.
Near death, the crew puts back into shore and, unable to find water, throws themselves on the mercy of the first nomads they encounter. The men are immediately stripped naked, then parceled out as slaves - after a bloody and protracted fight among the desert dwellers. Their first guzzle of water and sour camel's milk rips through their intestines, a cycle that is to be repeated throughout their ordeal.
Separated, sunburned, depleted, still naked and unable to keep up, the men are put on camels. "It is no coincidence that a camel's gait is called a `rack'." Blood was soon dripping from chafed thighs and calves.
The ordeal goes from horror to worse. The nomads themselves often have nothing to eat or drink; bloody encounters and thievery are common. The sailors are worth rather less than a lame camel. Less than a good blanket, in fact.
The physical suffering is enough to make you marvel at their will to live, but Dean also conveys the helplessness of slavery. Purposely dehumanized, their lives are entirely subject to commerce or whim. Riley, a man of his time who, Dean speculates, may have planned on acquiring a slave cargo, became a fervent abolitionist on his return.
Riley comes alive on the page as a man of indomitable will, who takes his responsibilities to his men to heart. Eventually he strikes a bargain with an Arab trader, a promise based on a lie and a gamble that develops into something more personal, if precarious. The denouement is a protracted drama of danger, diplomacy and daring that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Riley's book was a best selling sensation, which remained in print long after his death, so a certain amount of skepticism is necessary. But the later events of his life bear out his energy, strength and charisma. Dean's ("Patrick O'Brian: A Life Revealed") stirring account, fleshed out with information about the desert, the people, their history and the cultural importance of Islam, as well as the extremes the human body can endure, is as culturally informative as it is exciting.

    A voice from the past
    By Clara
She thought Fatty Arbuckle was guilty, Pola Negri charming, Charlie Chaplin annoying, and she absolutely LOATHED Theda Bara...but thought I disagree with her on every point above it's still nice to hear Miriam Cooper's version of events.

Miriam Cooper was a silent film actress who entered film right as it was reaching 'flickers' status. She found her way back to Griffith (who had given her first screen role as an extra) and made her way in to history with playing in "Birth of a Nation" (as Margaret Cameron) and "Intolerance" (The Friendless One). However she fell madly in love with a lowly assistant named Raoul Walsh, and left it all behind to play wifey to him. Of course that was what SHE wanted; he on the other hand wanted to be a great director and feature a Griffith actress in his films. So after a brief hiatus she re-entered film starring in her husband's films, until 1924 when their marriage was finally on the rocks (it ended a year or so later).

Cooper claimed she never wanted to be an actress, and indeed she never made a talkie or looked back. But she was an incredible, talented, gorgeous actress none the less and its great to hear her thoughts on the matter. To top it off she had a witty writing style, swore like a sailor, and told it like it is (or at least how she thought it was). She died shortly after this book was released, she had made a later career of touring college and lecture circuts speaking about her old career, amazed anyone remembered let alone STUDIED them.

Wonderful Look Into the Early Silent Film Industry
    By Marie
I picked up this book because I was conducting a research project on the now lost silent film "The Honor System," within which Miriam Cooper played a significant role. In reading the book, I not only learned more about the making of the Honor System, but also of the whole silent film industry. Cooper does an excellent job relaying her personal experiences and perceptions of early film actors and actresses, as well as how the general public as a whole perceived early films and their stars. Cooper wrote the book, with help from Bonnie Herndon, when she was in her late 70s. She had a wonderful memory and a witty writing style that really engages the reader. I picked up this book as part of a narrow research project, but finished it with a newfound interest in the entire silent film industry.

Set Yourself Free: Break the cycle of co-dependency and compulsive addictive behaviour, by Shirley Smith

If you have a friend, lover, family member or colleague with an addictive personality, then you can’t afford not to buy this book! Consider the following questions: • Do you attract partners who are either needy or engulfing, or fear intimacy and are emotionally unavailable? • Do you keep doing things you promised yourself you’d never do again? • Are you a control freak or feel out of control? • Have you lost your passion and sometimes feel numb? • Do you run on adrenaline and feel flat if you stop? • Has your childhood caused you to be anxious about parenting? • Do you crave intimacy, yet end up with intensity? • Do you experience life as “all or nothing?” • When you get what you want, do you enjoy it? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then this might be the most important book you ever read! Co-dependency is one of the most unrecognized conditions that damage relationships. It originates from the denial of the “true self” in order to survive within a dysfunctional societal, educational, religious or family system during one’s formative years of life. As adults, co-dependents are either attracted to addictive types or have an addictive personality. Co-dependency is a progressive disease that causes ever-increasing stress, misery, disruptive relationships, controlling behavior and physical illness. If left untreated, co-dependency can lead to addictions such as alcoholism, drug dependency, eating disorders, work addiction, compulsive gambling or spending, sex addiction and love addicted relationships. This book will help you to release yourself from the past, create a more balanced lifestyle, and experience the joy of fulfilling relationships.

    Freedom at Last
    By Soozie
A must read for anyone willing to take the challenge to free themselves from their disfunctional childhood beliefs. After reading Set Yourself Free I now have a better understanding of how and why i am the person i am today.... the good, the bad and the ugly.
You will learn that even if you believed your childhood was a happy one, we bring into our adult life all the disfunctional parts [ often hidden away in our subconcious ] are a result of what your parents have passed on to us. It's not about blaming your parents as they did the best job they could.
This is an opprtunity for you to stop the disfunctional behaviour passed on from generation to generation. If change is what you are looking for, take ownership of your new journey and be grateful that you have come to a place and time in your life where you're willing to look at the core beliefs you have been given, challenge them, remove the beliefs that no longer serve you.
We all have traumas that need healing and this book will help you find your true authentic self. Be brave and you'll be rewarded with an amzing new life... :)

    Rings a Bell
    By Johnny Mac
When I read this book, it didn't take long before I said "She's talking about me."

Shirley's book is a clearly written explanation of what happens to most people who grow up with damaged parents. Whether the parents have active addictions or just unhealed trauma, most can't really meet their children's emotional needs. As a result, children like me grow up to be adults with unhealed wounds.
The world is full of people like us. They run big companies, teach in our schools, minister our children, build our homes and run our governments. They are us.

Set Yourself Free helped me identify my issues, address the blocks and grow into a fully-functioning adult who is passionate about his relationships and career.

I recommend this book to anyone who has a niggling feeling that life could be better. Whether it is a more fulfilling career, better relationships or improved parenting, this book has a lot to offer.

addictions, boundarys and how to USE them in life
    By moscito
I was a "working traveller" in Australia, only 25years old, when I first got in touch with Shirely`s book "Set yourself free". I didn't get it in first place, through reading and thinking about it (must be the german way...?) ...only after "letting go of perfectionism", being present and being ok, the way I am", I felt such a release, after so many years of trying to "fit in and be perfect", especially in my family. Today I can communicate better and I ACCEPT THEM THE WAY THEY ARE! That was the biggest step for me. Thanks to Shirley Smith and her books, CD's and seminars.

The Thirtieth Year (Modern German Voices Series), by Ingeborg Bachmann

This is collection of the stories written by a distinguished German author who died in 1973. Reading these stories entails abandoning the terms of one's own comfort. The author's relentless vision demands that readers allows themselves to be hypnotised, taken over by her repetitive cadences and burning images of grief and loss. And yet, in the beauty of her images there is a tremendous affirmation of the world.

    From Scientific American
Intensely felt, uncomfortable, stylistically brilliant, resonant and imaginative.

    From The New Yorker
Bachmann writes in a Cublist prose of sudden cutoffs and reconnections that is acute and moving. She manages to convey that her women are playing out the Europe of their time and of before their time.

Ingeborg Bachmann has become one of my favourite writers of all time
    By Christopher A. Baker
Ingeborg Bachmann has become one of my favourite writers of all time. I highly recommend her other volume of short stories, Three Paths to the Lake (Simultan), and Darkness Spoken: The Collected Poems. If you are unfamiliar with her work, I would suggest the short stories first, then the novels: Malina, Book of Franza, Fanny Goldmann. If you're interested in her poetry but unsure about the collected poems check out an anthology of modern German language poetry that contains some of her poems, most will at least of one if not a few of hers.
