Some 35 years ago I was somewhat precariously balanced in a drilling derrick aligning a whipstock into a directional hole in North Holland by the Stokenbury method, and no doubt thinking to myself that I was at the very forefront of technology. It has also become apparent that the quality of the technical literature describing these advances has not kept pace with that of the advances themselves in many instances. A particular glaring example of this has been in the field of directional drilling where a large literature gap has existed for many years. I am delighted to see this gap now filled with the present volume by my friend Tom Inglis. Indeed it is only after reading his comprehensive book that I realise the extent of my own ignorance of the latest techniques of directional drilling and how desirable it was to have an authoritative text on the subject. I feel sure that this volume will be welcomed by the industry and warmly recommend it to all who are in any way involved and interested in the fascinating world of drilling.

Partha Chatterjee is professor of political science at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, and professor of anthropology at Columbia University. His books include The Politics of the Governed: Reflections on Popular Politics in Most of the World, A Possible India: Essays in Political Criticism, and The Nation and Its Fragments: Colonial and Postcolonial Histories.

Nivedita Menon is professor of political theory at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She is the author of Recovering Subversion and editor of Gender and Politics in India.

BEST NOVEL I HAVE EVER READ

Best novel I have ever read...again. I first read it in around 1973 and was moved so much by the story and the witing. Had always remembered it and decided to read it again after 40 years. It still holds up with the passage of time, and it's still the best novel I have ever read.

Love this book

This was my first novel that I ever read. The book was given to me from my aunt Betty, that is no longer living. I will always be greatful to her for turning me on to reading. I have read many books & can't remember most of the titles but this one & the sequel Mixed Blessing are forever in my mind. I even remembered that the lead character was named Elizabeth. I bought both books again and plan reading them again but this time I wont' give them away.

Good from start to finish.

This is a wonderful story from start to finish. Written in the 70's, the writing is more innocent then many books today, which I really enjoy.
You won't find bad words through this book. You will find a very admirable woman, much ahead of her times. She has to strike out on her own with three young children in a time when that just wasn't done. But she does it, She is very real, as are her children.
I have always enjoyed any book by Helen Van Slyke. Sadly she passed away, I still miss her stories.
Find a book with her name on it, and you will enjoy it.

Loads of education wrapped up in a fun kids' adventure book. Excellent Series!!!

We are really enjoying this book. It's full of fun adventures with more educational material than any penguin textbook I've read. This is a new series for us, and we plan to buy many more. It's about the Ad�lie penguin and their lifestyle, and has loads of information about how they live, eat, raise their young, and spend their time. It teaches about their natural predators, and most interesting is how they don't fear humans because they've never encountered a dangerous predator on land and so have had no reason to fear land-dwelling creatures. When the kids turn into penguins, we get to learn about life from the view of a penguin, but in human concepts, which is something regular books don't explain very well. And it has great cliffhangers to keep the action going! Plus, the excerpts that explain scientific facts are short and interesting and not at all disruptive to the flow of the book. We've finally found a series that both my kids and we (their parents) enjoy reading together.
