About the Author

Martin Ives, MBA, CPA, CGFM, CIA, serves as the Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Public Administration at New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Before entering the academic world, Ives was Vice Chair and Director of Research of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, a member of the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board, First Deputy Comptroller of the City of New York, and Deputy Comptroller of the State of New York.

In addition to this text, Professor Ives has co-authored three books (Program Control and Audit, Financial Condition Analysis and Management, and Government Performance Audit in Action). He has also written chapters for audit and municipal finance handbooks, has authored more than 25 articles for the Government Accountants Journal, the Journal of Accountancy, the Internal Auditor, and other professional journals. In addition, he has spoken to numerous professional and civic organizations. He was founding president of the Albany chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors and served on the governing boards of several other professional organizations.

Ives has received many honors and awards including the Public Service Award (Fund for the City of New York), the Governor Charles Evans Hughes Award (Capitol District chapter of the American Society for Public Administration), and the S. Kenneth Howard Award (Association for Budgeting and Financial Management). He has also been voted Adjunct of the Year by the students at NYU's Wagner Graduate School.

Joseph R. Razek, Ph.D., CPA (inactive), CGFM, is the Energy Accounting and Tax Conference Professor of Accounting at the University of New Orleans. A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, he received his master's of business administration from the University of Michigan and his doctorate from the University of Illinois. He is a certified public accountant and a certified government financial manager and has consulted for many governmental and not-for-profit organizations.

Dr. Razek has published articles in the Accounting Review, Government Accountants Journal, Accounting Historians Journal, Nonprofit World and other professional journals. He has also co-authored many chapters in governmental accounting handbooks, as well as a textbook on managerial accounting. Cited by his students as a dedicated and innovative teacher, Dr. Razek has received several teaching awards. He currently teaches courses in governmental and not-for-profit accounting and health care accounting at both the graduate and undergraduate level and is a member of the Louisiana Society of CPAs Health Care Task Force.

Gordon A. Hosch, Ph.D., CPA, CGFM, received his bachelor's degree from the University of New Orleans, a master's degree from the University of Arkansas, and his doctorate in accounting from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He has served as chairman of the Department of Accountancy and is currently the KPMG Professor of Accounting and Graduate Programs Coordinator in Accounting at the University of New Orleans. He has public accounting experience with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now KPMG) and has served as a faculty intern with the Department of Agriculture's National Finance Center.

Dr. Hosch is a member of the Louisiana Society of CPAs Governmental Accounting and Auditing Committee. He has made presentations to various organizations including the American Society of Women Accountants, the American Software Users Group, the U.S. Navy, and the Internal Revenue Service. He received the Educator of the Year Award from the Louisiana Society of CPAs as well as numerous teaching awards, including the University of New Orleans College of Business Outstanding Alumnus Award. His publications have appeared in the Governmental Accountants Journal and other journals. In addition, he has co-authored numerous chapters in governmental accounting handbooks. He has also reviewed numerous textbooks and papers during his career.

Algo bueno, algo malo, algo feo

El libro pretende ser un estudio de los comienzos del cristianismo; el autor reescribe con sus propias palabras y seg�n su interpretaci�n, algunos de los evangelios, los Actos de los Ap�stoles y las cartas de San Pablo. Pero lo hace selectivamente, resaltando lo que le gusta y denigrando de lo que no. Obviamente de modo arbitrario. Es la reflexi�n personal de un individuo que pas� de agn�stico a fiel creyente y de nuevo a agn�stico. En este proceso ha reflexionado sobre los or�genes del cristianismo. Por estos motivos, el libro no es para nada un an�lisis cr�tico del cristianismo, pero el leerlo estimula a buscar la verdad estudiando otros libros m�s serios y releyendo el nuevo testamento.

El libro contiene cosas buenas, malas y feas.

De bueno: Es un libro interesante y con sus cr�ticas al cristianismo nos hace reflexionar. El autor ha estudiado en detalle el nuevo testamento, ha pensado a fondo sobre el per�odo y la interpretaci�n de los evangelios, aunque cuando parece que lo ha hecho solo, sin debate con otras personas o expertos, como hablando consigo mismo. Nos muestra que nuestro cristianismo es “Paulino”, en contraste con la posici�n tradicional de la Iglesia que nos presenta el cristianismo como un bloque monol�tico, donde todos estaban de acuerdo y proveniente de las ense�anzas de Jes�s. Es Pablo el que cre� el cristianismo a su medida.

El libro ha recibido premios (Lire, Le Point, Le Monde). Pero, �por qu� los ha recibido? No lo s�. Pero al leerlo he constado que el autor especula sin pruebas. Es libro est� bien escrito, mantiene el inter�s, se lee bien, pero es malo como historia, es malo como memoria personal, malo como novela.

De feo tiene mucho. Solo algunos ejemplos. El escritor usa palabras groseras donde no es necesario. Dice que la Virgen Maria a lo mejor disfrutaba del sexo, que a lo mejor comet�a actos impuros. �A qu� viene esta especulaci�n? �Qu� tiene esto que ver con los or�genes del cristianismo o con la verdad hist�rica del nuevo testamento? Si quiere explicar que la Virgen Mar�a era una persona normal, hay muchas otras maneras de decirlo sin ser tan grosero………. y ofensivo. �Se puede tomar el libro en serio despu�s de leer esto?

Para explicar c�mo hace para distinguir lo que considera verdadero en los evangelios de lo que considera fantas�a el autor utiliza una descripci�n detallada de un video pornogr�fico que le gusta mucho mirar donde le parece que el placer es fingido en contraste con lo que sucede en la realidad. Carrere es capaz de percibir esta diferencia y de all� que es capaz de percibir la diferencia entre lo real y lo ficticio los evangelios (�!). Podr�a haber usado mejores maneras de explicar su arbitrariedad para calificar partes de los evangelios como fantas�a, como invento de sus autores. Poco serio.

Dedica cap�tulos a describir su b�squeda de una babysitter en Paris y a describir el proceso que sigui� para escribir un libro sobre la vida de Philip K. Dick, un drogadicto estadounidense que escrib�a fantas�as y ciencia �Qu� tiene que ver todo esto con los or�genes del cristianismo?

Y de malo tambi�n tiene mucho. El autor le toma el pelo a sus lectores. Debe pensar que todos somos ingenuos, que no tenemos esp�ritu cr�tico. Especulaci�n tras especulaci�n. Dice: “……..Yo pienso que Lucas debi� haber pensado que …..” “Me imagino que Lucas habr�a preferido escribir ….. pero pensando que no deb�a de hacerlo ha escrito ….…” Parece que sabe lo que pensaba o deb�as pensar Lucas. Comienza sus argumentos diciendo “Podr�a ser que ………pero aunque no lo puedo probar es posible….”, para despu�s afirmar “Como demostramos anteriormente…” y a partir de ese momento su especulaci�n se convierte en un hecho. Carrere usa el mismo argumento, primero especula y despu�s lo da como un hecho probado, porque es lo que piensa, sin haber demostrado nada. El autor afirma sobre Lucas “….Y si alguna cosa no le gusta, lo cambia sin pens�rselo dos veces” �C�mo sabe lo que le gusta o no le gusta a Lucas? �C�mo sabe Carrere lo que es verdad o lo que es invento? �Someti�ndolo a la prueba de la veracidad del video pornogr�fico? No es serio.

�Recomiendo el libro? Si, los estimular� a querer saber m�s. Pero hay que leerlo con esp�ritu cr�tico, como si se leyese la opini�n personal de alguien, opini�n frecuentemente fantasiosa y no como si el libro contuviera la �ltima palabra. Si quieren saber m�s sobre los or�genes del cristianismo hay que buscar en otra parte (en ingl�s recomiendo libros como “Paul and Jesus: How the Apostle Transformed Christianity” y “Paul: Follower of Jesus or Founder of Christianity?, no conozco libros en espa�ol sobre este tema, pero a lo mejor los podr�is encontrar algunos en el sitio de Amazon o en la librer�a).

Espero que su publicaci�n en espa�ol de lugar a an�lisis cr�ticos m�s a fondo, aunque dado lo especulativo y desordenado no estoy seguro que lo merezca. Lo prestigiar�an.

Disappointing, could have been a great book.

To really enjoy this book you have to be a serious studious of the Bible or a personal friend of the author. Some references and situations described by Emmanuel Carrere are very detailed and his assumptions are based on his believes, not necessarily on documented facts. As for the introduction is way too long and is more related to his personal life and experiences. More than once he gets lost in personal issues that are not relevant to the main topic. I flipped many pages so I could finish the book and go on to my next read.

Excellent introduction - scientific and fair

Imaginatively written, covering many of the key points - this is a great introduction to Buddhism for a modern Western person with no background in the subject.
As a scholar of Buddhist studies and a meditator, I've searched for years for a single book that would introduce my favourite topic to friends and family unfamiliar with it, without boring them to tears with complex ancient Indian cosmology, or turning them off with references to mystical mumbo jumbo.
This book, Siddhartha's Brain, seems to walk the fine line well between too much information (complex terminology) and not enough (skimming over important points). The author approaches the subject with an air of skepticism, which is helpful to the modern secular mindset, before progressing to showing the veracity of the claims. He uses science extensively, which ends up being the book's only drawback - a little too many 'a study showed that...' type references. He also tends to take the latest unresolved scientific issues as a springboard into speculation, a little too often. But in the end, it does no harm because he's hinting that beneath all the historical and cultural mumbo jumbo around traditional Buddhism, there is some very real value in its teachings, even if the science isn't yet up to the stage of being able to document it.
So if you're a newcomer who is curious as to what this whole Buddhism gig is about, do yourself a favour and read this. And then sit ;-)

A very intelligent enlightenment book...

This book provides a very articulate and thorough explanation of what enlightenment is scientifically and according to Buddhists texts, and the processes believed to get there. I especially liked the ancient Buddhist quotes and teachings, which lay the grounding philosophy for what I want from enlightenment.

Practical Advice for Reaching New Markets

This book is a fast-read with some great example of how companies, big and small, have made minor changes to their marketing message. These minor changes resulted in major results. In the book Kelly does a great job of using examples and real-world stories to make a point. She transferred the art of story-telling that she has mastered in her speaking career to her writing.

The information in the book is simple and practical. There are new markets that can be tapped into and if you take the time to understand your target market and what matters to them, you can gain their trust and their business. I see a lot of organizations that focus on niche marketing without really ever understanding the PEOPLE inside the target group. Many times marketers understand the business or personal needs of the market and often have a good solution for their problem. Many times, the trouble that businesses run into is that, even though they really do offer solid solutions, they have trouble reaching the audience. This book is a great reminder that marketers and businesses need to invest the time to understand the people-factor that composes their target market.

One of the things that I liked best about this book was the examples. To be honest, I would buy from any of the businesses that are profiled in the book because of their unique selling approaches. These examples made me realize that with a little thought and creativity, businesses can create real opportunities by learning how to market to people not like them. And if you aren't taking advantage of these opportunities, your competitors just might be.

I have had the pleasure of attending Kelly's speeches twice. Both times, I was astonished at the amount of knowledge and expertise she can share within a limited time slot. Charismatic, charming, humorous and professional are adjectives that fit her well, but she's so much more than words; she's a force in the marketing world.

Kelly McDonald is to diversity marketing as Buddha is to Buddhism. Plain and simple.

It's quite obvious that within the past three decades, diversity has taken over. The lines everywhere have begun to blur, meld and join. Changes like these have a tendency to cause havoc, confusion and chaos for marketing professionals in any field. How is one supposed to keep with the changing times? About the Author

Amy Wagenfeld received a BS in occupational therapy, an MA in human development, and a PhD in education. Amy has 20 years of clinical experience, with a majority of those years spent in various pediatric contexts, including school systems, outpatient pediatric rehabilitation clinics, and private practice. Amy is on the faculty at Lasell College in Newton, MA. In addition to her teaching and mentoring duties, Amy is the Clinical Director of Children's Therapy Connections, which provides consultative services and workshops to parents, administrators, teachers, and childcare providers.

Amy's research interests include the influence of music on the development of early attachment connections between babies and primary caregivers as well as the human-animal connection. Amy has presented her work on occupational therapy, human development, and attachment at local, state, and national conferences. Amy is also involved with several state and local nonprofit advocacy and community service organizations and is in the process of writing several other books on topics related to occupational therapy, attachment, and animal-assisted therapy.

In addition to her professional responsibilities, Amy is a passionate organic gardener. Amy, her husband Jeff, their wonderful and amazing 17-year-old son David, and incredibly spoiled dog Glacier live in suburban Boston, where they all enjoy traveling, long walks, trips to the beach, and tennis.

Jennifer Kaldenberg is Director of Occupational Therapy Services at New England College of Optometry and the New England Eye Institute. She received her BS in occupational therapy from the University of New Hampshire and an MSA in Administration with a concentration in Health Care Administration from Central Michigan University. Jennifer has over 10 years of clinical experience, with a majority of those years spent in neurological and visual rehabilitation. Jennifer previously was an assistant professor at Lasell College in Newton, MA and currently lectures at the New England College of Optometry.

Jennifer's research interests include the impact of vision on functional independence, visual perception, and neurological visual impairment. She has spoken extensively on the role of occupational therapy in vision rehabilitation to occupational therapy practitioners, optometrists, and the general public.

In addition to her professional pursuits, Jennifer and her husband Casey are the proud parents of three wonderful boys who all enjoy participating in sporting activities and traveling together. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys painting, drawing, and cooking.

Good for OTA and OT students

I used this book as an OTA student and now use it frequently as an OT student, in class and on fieldwork. It's better than the book I had to buy for OT school. I like how it's set up and the layout makes it easy to find what I'm looking for. Straightforward and practical information.

Not the best book for peds

I did not really like this book. It made it difficult to understand anything. it was not my favorite and enjoyed the other pediatric textbook in class.

Excellent book

I am a student hoping to get into an OTA program and really wish to work with peds when I graduate. I started reading this book as a jump start before my actualy OTA classes begin and it is very helpful. I would recommend it.
