From Booklist
Money, a powerful factor in family dynamics, is often a difficult subject for families to address. Godfrey aims to help parents send their children into the world as financially savvy adults by identifying 10 specific skills that can be mastered by children ages 5 through 18. These include saving, keeping track of money, spending wisely, living on a budget, investing, handling credit responsibly, and using money to help others. Godfrey contends that her advice is for parents of every income level because the same financial issues confront those with means as confront those with few resources, regardless of race, class, culture, or political orientation. While this book conveniently doubles as an infomercial for her consulting practice, it does offer valuable insight into an important subject. Mary Whaley

excellent parenting advice about how to think about money
By Amazon Customer
My husband and I were wrestling with the age old question of to give allowance or not to give allowance to our kids. And if they get allowance, how much should they get? Of course this is an age old question for all of those parents who have gone before, but we are rookie parents with two kids and we knew enough to know someone must have thought about this.

My husband and I were discussing what chores should they do to get allowance? What do we want our kids to learn from getting an allowance? Is it just so they stop asking us for money or is it so they can learn about the tradeoffs of spending vs saving?

A friend recommended this book and the author cuts right to the chase: you give kids allowance so that they can learn about money. Kids do chores because they are part of the family and that is what a family does. In addition, she says, you should explain to your kids that they should probably have three different jars for their money; 1) this is money I am going to spend now, 2) this is money I am saving so I can buy something later, and 3) this is money I am going to donate to those less fortunate than we are.

We found this advice super helpful. Our kids do chores without negotiating allowance; and they are learning that if you spend your money you don't have any left then you will have to figure out how to earn money until your next allowance.

There are other great ideas in this book but we bought it to help us think about allowance. And it does that fabulously!

I highly recommend this book if you have kids.

By Stacy Allred: Outstanding. One of the BEST books on the market to develop a practical plan to teach kids financial literacy
By Stacy A.
In a TED Talk, on `What we learned from 5 million books,' speakers Erez Lieberman Aiden and Jean-Baptiste Michel share the idea that you must find the interception of the `awesome' and the `practical.' This is especially true with financial education. While financial education is incredibly important or `practical,' the traditional teaching of financial education can be "boring" to kids. Joline's book is chalked full of creative ideas that perfectly find the interception of practical and awesome: ranging from mall scavenger hunts, to financial films and charity cafes.

The creative ideas along with the education of how to do this right and a game plan by age and stages, make this one of the best financial parenting books out there. Working with parents to develop financial parenting plans, I have been using the original version of this book for a decade and have found it invaluable. This updated version takes it to the next level. Joline's life work is financial education; her years of experience and wisdom shine through with the ideas in the book. There are tons of financial parenting books on the market, and having read most of them, I have found this to be one of the very best.

Has more to do with values than teaching kids about finances
By book junkie
I hate to be the dissenting voice, but I bought this book to help me teach my children to be Financially Fit, and I don't think I got what I paid for. I am a financial advisor, so I have a pretty good grasp of the concepts, I just need help translating them and delivering them at opportune times to my 7 and 10 year old boys. My goal here is to make sure that when my kids leave the house they understand what basic investments are, how to allocate their spending between needs, wants, and saving for the future, basic budgeting skills, and an understanding of how debt works and how much it costs over time. What this book contained were lots of tips to encourage your children to become activists, give to charities and use their money to change the world. Not that I am against any of those things; when my 10 year old saw a sad-eyed puppy commercial for the ASPCA, he gave me some of his savings and I cheerfully mailed a check. I know how to teach my children about giving to charity, but that isn't what I bought this book for, and it isn't what the title implies.

There are some helpful ideas to teach your kids financial concepts in this book, the Sample Lifestyle Budget she provides is excellent. The proposed scavenger hunt to the mall idea is horrifying. Ms Godfrey proclaims that "shopping is entertainment." Whaaat? This is exactly what I'm trying NOT to encourage in my children. Later in the book she says that yoga is helpful in calming the high you get from shopping- also she recommends meditation, exercise and a cup of tea. Really?

I bought this book because I wanted to know how and when to explain this stuff to to my 7 year old who, just last week when told that a price of an item was too much, told me I should just write a check for it. There is no help in here for explaining the mechanics of a checking account to a 7 year old. Also no discussion of living beneath your means, what a 401-K is, the benefits of saving early vs late, how much you should be saving, what social security is, taxes, an explanation of what stocks and bonds are, etc. While there was an explanation of using credit cards, there was not much in the way of showing kids how easily you can get into trouble with debt or how to calculate the cost of debt.

I didn't get much financial training from my parents and neither did my husband, so we don't know how or when to discuss it with our kids. We both learned it the hard way and with self-education, but would like to spare our children the mistakes we made. Not much help from this book- we will figure it out as we go I guess.

There is a clear liberal slant to this book. If the information had been good that would have been irrelevant to me, however some readers may object to the suggestions of steering your children towards green and impact investing, low impact living, becoming activists, the Occupy Wall Street Movement, etc. For example, the book suggests that you sign up for an investing newsletter to help your child understand investments which is a great idea. The newsletter it recommends is a green investing newsletter instead of Kiplinger's. I guess what I object to is that the book doesn't try to teach financial concepts like how to evaluate stocks, it tries to promote a values-based way of addressing money. It would have been easy to address this in a non-partisan way, since financial concepts, like pay yourself first, compound interest, debt- are all politically neutral.

Duty Free: A Novel, by Moni Mohsin

Jane Austen's Emma, transported to the outrageous social melee of 21st-century Lahore.

Our plucky heroine's cousin, Jonkers, has been dumped by his low-class, slutty secretary, and our heroine has been charged with finding him a suitable wife -- a rich, fair, beautiful, old-family type. Quickly. But, between you, me and the four walls, who wants to marry poor, plain, hapless Jonkers?

As our heroine social-climbs her way through weddings-sheddings, GTs (get togethers, of course) and ladies' lunches trying to find a suitable girl from the right bagground, she discovers to her dismay that her cousin has his own ideas about his perfect mate. And secretly, she may even agree.

Full of wit and wickedness and as clever as its heroine is clueless, Duty Free is a delightful romp through Pakistani high society -- though, even as it makes you cry with laughter, it makes you wince at the gulf between our heroine's glitteringly shallow life and the country that is falling apart, day by day, around her Louboutin-clad feet. Moni Mohsin, already a huge bestseller in India, has been hailed as a modern-day Jane Austen, and compared to Nancy Mitford and Helen Fielding. Duty Free is social satire at its biting best.

Good story once you get accustomed to the dialect...
By Angela Reads
This is, hands down, the most unusual book I've read this year. Moni Mohsin is a Pakistani novelist who currently lives in London. This is her American debut novel, and the entire book is written in what I think is a Pakistani/English dialect. If you can get used to the dialect, you may enjoy the story.

The heroine is an unnamed Pakistani woman of the wealthier class, with husband Janoo and young son Kulchoo. Her aunt demands that she help find a wife for her cousin Jonkers, but she isn't thrilled about it. Her biggest concerns are her beloved son Kulchoo, her social standing, and her expensive clothes, makeup, and lifestyle. Her marriage to Janoo is obviously in trouble. And on top of all that, there are bombs dropping around her and terrorist attacks to deal with. The last straw is when Jonkers decides that he might want to pick his OWN bride instead of an arranged marriage.

At first, our unnamed narrator is quite shallow, but she shows some good character development as the story progresses. And she can be clever and funny. I think there is a lot of humor here. The other characters are colorful, and overall it's an entertaining story. This has been compared to Jane Austen's Emma, but I disagree. Both ladies tried to be match makers, but the similarity ends there, in my opinion. I have never read a novel set in Pakistan before, and I enjoyed the glimpse of what life might be like for a woman in the upper classes of that country.

But back to the dialect. You really need to get used to the dialect in order to enjoy the story. Some readers will not be able to get past it. I had a hard time reading the first few chapters. In nearly every paragraph you will find wrong spelling, incorrect grammar, and Pakistani words thrown in. (Oh, yeah, and the narrator can also be politically incorrect at times.)

Let me give you some sample sentences, so you can judge for yourself:

"You know Jonkers, na? He's my Aunty Pussy's one and only child. Her sun and air."
"But I have very good sick-sense like that."
"They lost some when Musharraf's guvmunt did its little a countability drama in the begining."
"Good radiance, I thought. Last month, thanks God, die-vorce came through."

After a few chapters, I did get used to the writing, and I enjoyed the plot. I would recommend this book to readers who don't mind lots of dialect, are interested in Pakistan, or who simply want to read something unusual by a new novelist.

Lahore High-Society through the eyes of a social butterfly
By Avid reader
"Duty Free" (originally released as "Tender Hooks") is a worthy follow-up to Moni Mohsin's "Diary of a Social Butterfly". This novel continues to follow our heroine from get-together (GT) to kitty party to wedding in her quest to find a suitable bride for her cousin(rich-rich, fair-fair, and no worries with Jonkers' divorce from his trashy secretary). She must find a bride before the middle of December, or else something might happen to her son (Butterfly believes that Jonkers' mum, Pussy, has cursed Butterfly's son if the bride is not found).

While all this bride hunting is going on, Pakistan is falling further into disarray. Beardo-weirdos (fundamentalists) are blowing up offices, trains, schools, and cars; backstabbing frenemies are working against Butterfly's matrimonial mission; and her marriage is slowly degenerating into nothingness. Our heroine does get a wake up call or two-about the political and social situation in her country (it cannot be ignored or swept under the rug), and about her marriage (it takes two to make a marriage work).

Some of the previous reviewers have had a problem with Butterfly's malapropisms and language usage. I know people like Butterfly, and have received letters from them and they are very like what is in this book. Yes, Moni Mohsin goes a little over the top with this device, but it fits the character, who is also over the top and larger than life.

Between you, me and the four walls...
By Amy W
I love to read new versions of Jane Austen novels and have to say that I was excited to start reading `Duty Free' by Moni Moshin for I thought with a setting such a modern day Lahore it has to have so much potential for fun and intrigue. The story was hard for me to get into, not that I didn't find it interesting but it was the language the author used that made it a very difficult read. I understand that the feel of the novel was to create a 2nd English language feel with words like "baggrounds" but it lost its feel for me when I was reading because I wanted to correct the language over and over again. Putting the language aside, the writing style is simple and flows but the story did have a journal or diary type feel when reading and I found it to be exhausting when the main character is nothing like our Emma but is much more self-centered and money oriented women. The story had some funny antidotes and some memorable characters, but I found it predicable and overall the language just so very trying on my nerves... as Mrs. Bennet would say. (Another Jane Austen reference) Before coming to the end and having some of my hopes redeemed by the way the author tied everything together, I was secretly hoping that Janoo, the unnamed heroine's husband, might just decide that he has had enough of his wife and take their son and leave all this drama behind. It pains me to be so honest in my review, but I just honestly could not get into this novel not even for all the kitties in the world.

Japan and Korea (Armies of the Nineteenth Century: Asia), by Ian Heath

This volume provides a detailed study of the astonishing reinvention of the Empire of Japan during the 19th century as it emerged from 200 years of self-imposed isolation to become a military superpower. As late as the 1850s the country remained technologically and militarily stagnant, but within just 40 years – in what must rank as the most rapid and comprehensive cultural transformation in world history – it had managed not only to absorb and successfully imitate several hundred years of Western technological progress, but had become one of the late Victorian world’s top ten military powers. During the same timeframe it also embraced the concept of colonialism, and with its invasion of China in 1894 and virtual occupation of Korea soon after took its first fateful steps along a road that would lead, with horrible inevitability, to head-on collision with the Allies in World War Two.

The evolution of its army, arms, uniforms and tactics during the 19th century are all covered, from samurai armor to Western uniforms, and from Katana to Krupps. Korea, by contrast, participated only reluctantly in military modernization, and adopted a limited program of reform only under foreign pressure – especially Japanese, but also American, Russian and Chinese – in the closing decades of the century. Such reforms as the country attempted nevertheless proved too little and too late, and were insufficient to prevent Korea becoming first a puppet state and then a colony of its maritime neighbor. The final part of the book comprises a detailed index for the five volumes of the series published thus far.

Very Informative book
By danny boy
Great book with lots of interesting facts about Japanese and Korean troops. There is an abundance of Japanese coverage over that of the Koreans. There are lots of intriguing line drawings of what these troops would have looked like.

Japan and Korea in the 19th Century
By Seankwondo1987
Very detailed book on Japanese, Korean, and Ainu armies throughout the latter half of the 19th century. Only complaint is the authors obvious confusion with some Korean names as he gives either Chinese (Ping Yang instead of Pyongyang) or odd spellings of places giving the correct name in parenthesis while listing the odd spelling as the correct way. But overall these are minor complaints as the information regarding the uniforms and weaponry is very accurate. Overall a wonderful purchase for any wargamer or historian interested in the numerous conflicts of Colonial Asia.
