Great little book to get before your trip to Amsterdam

I really enjoyed this book. It illustrates great places to check out while visiting Amsterdam. I'm glad I bought this book because it tells you about places you wouldn't find otherwise. Amsterdam is a great city to visit especially for creative types. This book is small and easy to carry and is great to accompany your trip to Amsterdam. Another place where I found a lot of creative places to visit in Amsterdam was a blog called 'Design Sponge' they have an article on visiting Amsterdam that shows a lot of unique stores and restaurants to visit.

Excellent reference includes CD-ROM

I work as a professional translator and editor and find that I use this book several times a day to find just the right word in English. For example, a German sentence might say that the writer was stuck in "strong traffic" (starker Verkehr), but in English we say "heavy traffic" (not "strong traffic"). This book helps you come up with the right adjective in English when you know that the literal translation of the foreign-language one doesn't sound right.

It is more complete than the "BBI" dictionary and comes with a free CD-ROM, which means that you can take it with you on your laptop without having to carry the book.

The research and representation in this monograph is second to none. Since Sir Professor Ghillean T. Prance and his team (my wife being part of that team) have done such a great job, you can save yourself a trip to the rainforests and reduce the impact on that ecosystem (although you should try to reduce your impact in whatever ecosystem you live). A tiny part of a larger picture...

The Terracotta Army of the First emperor of China is a tiny book, 32 pages about the army of life-sized warriors, made from pottery. The book is part of the Close Up series, each book meant to give you an introducation about a certain subject. So while the book is not meant to be a detailed study of the army it does give you a lot - photos, a timeline, background of why it was made and how it was found. A nice little book, I got if from National Geographic Museum when they had a display on the soldiers. I will be looking for other titles in the series.

Good Brief Introduction

This book was required reading for a course I took on Islam. It introduces you to mainstream Islamic beliefs and actions. It also gives a brief history of Islam during the time of the prophet and after. It discusses Islamic law (Qur'an, Hadith, Sunna) and the different sects of the religion Including Sunni (Ahl al-Jama'ah wa-al-Sunna), Twelver Shi'i, Sevener Shi'i (Isma'ili), Zaydi, and Sufi. The only complaint I have is that it is rather pricey considering the size (only 126 pgs.). Also, the chapter discussing Islamic thought (CH 5) is way too short and simplistic to be effective (although the intent of the book is to be just a brief introduction). My favorite part of the book is the last chapter (CH 6) in which the author discusses what constitutes "authentic" Islam. All in all a good introduction to Islam especially for those who only want a very brief and quick read.

I had to purchase this book for a class, and we used it early on to primarily receive a broad understanding of the religion of Islam. Although I believed I understood the basics of Islam due to having grown up around a highly Islamic culture, this book delved into important information that I was unfamiliar with in a way that was easy to grasp through thorough yet uncomplicated descriptions and examples. A great introduction into the religion for anyone interested.
