Wonderful adjunct to AA's Big Book

Bill W was one of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, the 12-step group that has saved many a life and family. How he got the wisdom? Well, that is a miracle. The main book, of course, is the Big Book, but here we have selections from Bill's other writing.

I've long had a copy but these small pages never meant as much to me as they do now. You see, I purchased a number of used copies because a group I belong to was starting a meeting based on this book. We read one page each meeting and then members comment on that. It is working out beautifully, very spiritually, just as folks with prior experience with the same said it would.

If we had to purchase more, the more expensive new copies, I think I would ask the group to buy the large print version for the benefit of aging eyes. The print here is kinda small.

These daily readers are a necessity for anyone... If you're in NA or AA you probably have seen them floating around a meeting or two... For me, I love to use them when my brain isn't being very nice to me. They help me to see the light, and if your mind is open they will do the same for you.

As a retired Police Detective who has been involved in several traumatic incidents, I volunteer time to support groups for First Responders with PTSD and/or substance abuse issues. These books always come in handy and are a great way to begin or end a meeting.

In the turn-of-the-century world pictured in this clever "history," upper-case Vowels don't let their lower-case kids play with little Consonants, and "Consonants [prefer] their own sounds: PRGHT! or SSSSP! Good, strong, snapping noises." Petty skirmishes escalate into a civil war: Vowels strategize ("We'll hit them with our screeching sounds"), Consonants attack an EIEIO formation ("Let those barnyard sounds try to stop the snarling GRRR's") and Y's become "a house divided." The Turners, a sister-and-brother team, trump standard alphabet books with this singular story, which concludes as the battling letters finally unite to fight a greater foe: a giant, illegible scribble. Priscilla Turner's inventive wordplay is an exercise in pronunciation, as when the Consonants send in "the freezing BR's." Whitney Turner's expressive Vowels and Consonants posture with stick arms and legs and the merest hints of facial features. They do battle in single-engine planes shaped like T's and E's, and at the happy ending, dancing pairs spell out "WE" and "US." What a bunch of characters! Ages 4-8.

Grade 2-4?Narrated in a pseudo-serious tone, this is the fable of vowels and consonants who do not get along. There is terrible bickering and constant rivalry between them. Finally, war is declared and a conflagration occurs complete with dive-bombing T's, marching D's, spear-tossing J's, and paratrooper U's. Amid the fighting, a scrawling, formless chaos appears. Individually, the letters cannot halt the scratching threat of disaster, but when they cooperate and form actual words, the jumbled scrawl at last rolls out of town. This is a stilted attempt to teach about vowels and consonants through adult humor. Shaping actual letters into characters with spindly arms and legs and headless faces is too cute, and the story line falls flat. The colorful, busy watercolor illustrations do little to pick up the story. There is a condescending tone that children will see through, and they'll find little to enjoy in this obvious grammar lesson. The long and short of it is, they are sly, cunning, two-faced creatures," and the Vowels, who told their children not to stray into the Consonant Quarter, for "who could imagine what horrible things a gang of roving Consonants might do to an unsuspecting Vowel?" War is declared and takes its toll until a common enemy unites the letters to do what they do best together: make words. Children in the midst of learning to read and write will enjoy the drama and humor evident in both the words and illustrations. Energetic yet controlled, the colorful artwork will draw children to this witty story. The letters are personalized enough to make them intriguing without descending into cuteness. This book gave my learning reluctant 5 yo now 6yo a love of letters and made them less intimidating. He loves planes though and asked me to order this book after reading at his school library!!

highly visual

My 5 year old BEGS to read and re-read this book over and over! It is highly visual and the illustrations are of good quality. The story is so interesting that she keeps taking the information and taking the storyline in different directions of her own creation. Talk about synthesising! Did I mention that she is a VERY picky consumer of books? If she doesn't like 'em she's adamant about not having anything to do with them. This one's a winner!

Good, but you should pay less than $52 for this book

This book is very good and detailed. It is definitely a classic book in what regards to international evidence. Everybody quotes it. The only problem is that it is a bit old.

It has chapters related to:
The nature and sources of the rules of evidence;
Order and time of the submission of evidence;
The Production of Evidence;
The Admission of Evidence;
Documentary Evidence;
Testimonial Evidence;
Evidence subject to special rules of admission and evaluation;
Propossitions not requiring proof and
Rehearings and revision on the basis of newly discovered or fraudulent evidence.

Each of these themes is thoroughly analyzed.

However, William S. Hein has the new reprinted version at $52. [...] , so you shouldn't pay more than that for the book.
