In this major work, Slobodan Curcic traces the development of architecture in the Balkans from late antiquity to the height of the Ottoman Empire. Covering not just ecclesiastical buildings but architectural enterprises ranging from urban conglomerations, simple houses, and palaces, to fortifications, cisterns, aqueducts, and bridges—Curcic assesses the origins and impact of Byzantine architecture in the region.
This book—the first of its kind on the subject matter—considers the continuity of architectural tradition in a region marked by profound political, cultural, and religious confrontations, as well as periods of creative interactions over a historical span of nearly thirteen centuries. Revealing in terms of the largely unknown material it presents, the book explores processes whose significance extends beyond the Balkan Peninsula itself. Illustrated with several hundred photographs and drawings, most specifically made for this purpose, the book is a landmark achievement.

Incredibly complete history of balkan buildings
By Robert Ray
This is a massive analysis of the architectural history of the Balkans (Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Croatia and European Turkey) from the late Roman Empire to the first century after the Ottoman conquest, well illustrated and with good reference maps. To the student of architecture the book will be irreplaceable. For the lay (amateur) reader, it could serve as a wonderful travel guide to wonderful old churches, fortresses, and other buildings. I still remember how beautiful were the cathedral of Trogir and the monastery church of Sopocani, Dubrovnik and Diocletian's Palace at Split. Much of the art history (and historical) writing about the Balkans is very much focused on individual nations (and their national 'myths'), so it's very useful to have a book that looks at the region as a whole as this one does.
As thick as it is, I wish it had had a glossary and more pictures of church interiors. There are some errors in the references to the pictures and at least one caption has its references reversed.
To this non-expert reviewer, it is curious that so many Orthodox churches left so little room for worshippers as compared to Western churches. Also surprising is the lack of statuary on churches, especially given the prominent role of icons in the Orthodox church, so the author might have spent more space talking about Orthodox ritual and how it affected building requirements. But the continuity from the Romans through the Byzantines and even into the Ottoman Empire was a real surprise.
Another worthy book from Princeton University Press.

For lovers of architecture..... and history
By John Henry
This work was suggested to me in the preface to Dr. Peter Brown's book Through the Eye of a Needle... (Princeton, 2012) (a wonderful work itself) in which he lists Dr. Curcic and this book as an example of excellence in regional studies in the history of the Roman Empire. I tracked the work down quite easily through Princeton and it is indeed a marvelous work. It is remarkable because it approaches it's subject almost completely from the point of view of the the region- not the empire which is how most histories of architecture deal with this sort of issue. It covers the widest range of architectural forms available- and as far as I can tell- explains some things in some areas of the Balkans that had never been discussed before, at least in depth and from both architectural and historical perspectives.
There really is no other book quite like it. Books that compare to it perhaps are MacDonald, Architecture of the Roman Empire, 2 vols. (Yale) and Ball, Warwick. Rome in the East. (Routledge, 2002), although i hesitate to include the latter because it really is not a full-blown architectural study- more a regional study with architectural overtones.
The plates are full- very good color, and the drawings are extensive, appropriate and always illustrative. It is not always that you can read a chapter or even a page or two and have the world of the Balkans brought back to you with such vividness. It is also not often that you can learn something new on every page. It is hoped this author continues his research and writing.
For lovers of history and architecture this is really fun.
