About the Author
Author Todd Murphy is a long-time member of Laurentian university Behavioral Neurosciences research group, known for the God Helmet, which operates under the direction of Dr. Michael A Persinger. He has published in the Journal for Near-Death Studies, Psychology Reports, Activitas Nervosa Superior, and the journal, Neuroquantology. His 9-hour lecture series can be seen on www.youtube.com. He is also the developer of the Shakti and Shiva Neural stimulation systems, which made Dr. Persinger’s pioneering neural stimulation work available to the general public. His studies in the field of neurotheology began in 1985, becoming increasingly formal until his work found publication in academic journals, beginning in 1998. This is the first volume of his projected two (or three) volume series “Sacred Pathways: The Brain’s role in Religious and Mystic Experiences.”

This Book is Mind-blowing

This book is mind-blowing. It gives a set of theories that puts most major spiritual ideas into a completely new and scientific context. One thing that impressed me was that it doesn't claim any of it's ideas are proven (they're put forward as hypotheses), or that it's ideas are better than the traditional ones. It's an atheist book, but it doesn't put religion down at all. The author seems to have a healthy respect for religion, but it's obvious he respects Darwin more. When I was in college, I remember one professor telling me that a good scietific theory is one that explains a lot while making the smallest number of assumptions. If that's really how it works, then this is a great piece of science. Everything else has references to scientific papers. I didn't find anything crackpot or pseudoscietific in it. I expected some of it would be farfetched, but the author knows scietific method too well for that. I'm going to have to read it again, but next time, I'll begin at the beginning, and not jump around the way I did with my first reading. I knew about Persinger's work with the brain and God, so I decided to take a chance and just get it. I'll tell you I wasn't dissapointed.

Every truth seeker should have this in their library

Dr. Murphy has done an outstanding job of scientifically exploring the human spiritual experience. Before reading this book, I completed the work that Dr. Andrew Newburg compiled, entitled "The Spiritual Brain". The two works are complimentary, however Sacred Pathways delves into the intricate interrelationships of brain functions as it relates to the various spiritual practices in the world. Dr. Murphy is not deterred from any spiritual topic no matter how esoteric or potentially controversial it may be.
For me, what was truly fascinating was the work done on understanding near death experiences (NDEs). Dr. Murphy was able to quantify the various steps that lead up to the "point of no return". Having personally touched on an NDE myself , it was quite profound to read about the collective examples from around the world. The analysis and summary dialogue on NDEs is probably some of the best I've read.
This book deserves nothing less than five stars. However, as noted in other reviews the book has a number of grammatical errors. They're the kind of errors that one gets when editing and re-editing written material. I'm guilty of the same thing when writing a long email or Word document myself. In all fairness, Dr. Murphy calls this out in the beginning of the book. He welcomes feedback on these errors, and it will be a very good thing if they are ultimately fixed. They in no way subtract from the profundity of this work.

Discard all preconceptions, ye who enter here

This book has plenty to disturb people of a more conservative or traditional religious bent, but there are some unexpected theories about topics close to the heart of the new age crowd as well. In short, this is the sort of revoluntary book that could shake up your whole world view.
Do you wonder about things like reincarnation, near death experiences, mystical experiences, and even UFOs? Look no further than the gray matter beneath your skull. Take a tour of the wonders inside your head. When you reemerge you may consider moving to California (read the book to find out why) or taking up prayer, even if it's just to pray for yourself. Or, maybe we should all pray that this book finds the wide audience it deserves.
