Long regarded as the standard history of the subject, Franois Michaud's History of the Crusades, published in 1877, recorded over four centuries of passionate, bloody wars that brought the countries — and cultures — of Asia and Europe into conflict with one another. To illustrate Michaud's classic study, Gustave Dor executed 100 striking plates, capturing all the savagery, nobility, and vast sweep of the centuries-long conflict.
This splendid collection includes all 100 of the Dor illustrations, including scenes of Peter the Hermit Preaching the Crusade, The War Cry of the Crusaders, The Massacre of Antioch, The Road to Jerusalem, The Crusade of Children, The Discovery of the True Cross, The Baptism of Infidels, Two Hundred Knights Attack Twenty Thousand Saracens, Richard Coeur de Lion Delivering Jaffa, The Battle of Lepanto, Entry of the Crusaders into Constantinople, and many more. Masterly in their combination of power, vivid detail, and striking visual effects, the plates are perhaps the finest pictorial recreation of the immense clash of cultures and religions underlying the great historical drama of the Crusades.
Sure to delight any lover of fine art or magnificent book illustrations, Dor's Illustrations of the Crusades, with descriptive captions and a concise chronology of the principal events, will also serve as an invaluable source of striking royalty-free illustrations.

Dore does it again!
By Allen Holden
Beautiful, lyrical, and sensuous images from the Crusades.I am enraprured by the scope, graphic power and compositional greatness of this largely forgotten artist. Though we may look at the politics of the Crusades differently than the Victorians, this book is sure to please any fan of 19th century art. One look at Dore and you see where Cecil B. Demille got much of his inspiration.

Excellent
By R. Smith
Excellent book. This is a must-have for fans of Dore's work. I'm almost tempted to buy a second copy to frame a few pages. I will say that the paper is not exactly bright-white, compared to similar products (The Dore Bible Illustrations, The Dore Illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy), but I'm not going to take a star away on account of that.

Dore: true Crusader among simple knights!
By Debora Gau
As a student of the Crusade period, I would be hard-pressed to find illustrations that better represent the time in history, either in literature, art, legend, or historical tales! Dore brings us directly back to a time we long to touch in our fantasies, and gives us an appreciation of what it was like to ride with the Crusaders "back in the day". There are precious few really good artists who truly help us to reach back like Dore. Oh, perhaps Leighton, Waterhouse, and a number of the pre-Raphaelite painters; perhaps Pyle, Wyeth, and a few other illustrators. And of course novelists such as Stevenson, Lamb, Doyle, Pyle once more, Scott, and Haggard, to name just a few--can transport us through their words back to the days when hearts and swords met on the field of battle. But there is something about Dore who truly captures the feel and atmosphere of the time. This book is given 5 stars only because it is not possible to give it 6; a true gem among jewels!
