This is the book that blew the lid off the bully-associated child suicide epidemic the authors named ‘bullycide’.
The shattering statistics compiled by Neil Marr and Tim Field were the first ever recorded on what had been a secret and fatal school syndrome that causes terror and death at playtime.
Heartbreaking interviews and case histories in these pages opened the eyes of an indifferent world. It’s a book crammed with useful, encouraging advice. It has spawned countless other books, official action, scholarly reports, plays, movies, parent-teacher groups, media campaigns and websites.
But has the world really learned since its original publication exactly ten years ago? Are things getting better for embattled kids who see life as a fate worse than death, or are the bullies using new, more covert means to practice their lethal evil?
This second edition – not so much an update as a history lesson (and those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it) – is by overwhelming popular request that we cannot deny.
The authors make their purpose clear. They intended to shock, and they succeeded. Although tragic stories dominate the book, there’s lots of practical advice too. It’s an angry book … an excellent book – a call to action and a cry on behalf of unhappy children.
Gerald Haigh. Times Education Supplement.
Marr and Field have coined the word ‘bullycide’ to describe the tragic decision of children to choose suicide rather than face another day of bullying. The book provides statistics, case studies and expert advice.

There's something we can do
By Gail Conn
Dan Olweus pioneered a program in Norway that targets all the children in a school, and focuses attention on the not so "innocent" bystanders who laugh and jeer when victims are bullied. I wish there was wider use of his program in the US and elsewhere. I think it would change the world, because bullying continues in the workplace, in the home, and beyond, and often, it's rewarded, and that's just wrong.

Essential reading for every teacher, school official & parent
By M. Derby
Marr & Field's eloquent plea for compassion has not been available in America until fairly recently. We've failed to make as much progress against bullying, relative to European schools. The book's greatest strength is its personal, individual focus on those kids repeatedly targeted by bullies: many suffering lifelong damage unnoticed by anyone else.
Countless children (with their potential creative gifts, which otherwise would have been offered to the world) are tossed aside. Many kids feel too humiliated to tell about it, even to those they most love and trust. They feel powerless, or blame themselves. ("No one else is being treated this way. I must deserve it somehow.") The bullying itself is corrosive to trust: gradually but effectively eroding it.
Too often, "responsible" adults lay blame on those seeking help! No wonder so many brutalized kids--surrounded by apparently threatening peers and uncaring grown-ups--retreat into soul-sinking isolation.
Every school has an "anti-bullying policy," put to paper by committee (often lifted word-for-word from another source): then thrown into a drawer, never seen again. The purpose: not to create an environment in which bullying is never tolerated, but to shield schools from liability. Why, teachers and administrators might be held responsible, if a child were hospitalized or killed!
Fortunately some schools truly seek to create safe environments for all children. One of the most beneficial strategies is to encourage every student's involvement. Most often, the bullies are few. But most students will look the other way: fearing if they bring their concerns to a teacher, or are seen being helpful to a bullied classmate, this invites becoming a favored target themselves.
We can only forgive their unwillingness to act alone. With no authority to back them up, they inhabit a dangerous world.
But what if students are encouraged to join together, to protect the most vulnerable among them? And in addition, the school makes them feel truly safe? Then it's the bullies who will be marginalized: alone, with no one leaping to their aid.
I am permanently (physically and mentally) disabled from the lingering damage of more than a decade of bullying.
Through all those seemingly endless days of intense & frequent bullying, taunting and ostracism: I was helpless. This need never happen again to any child. Ever.
It's time to listen to our kids. And not merely mouth the correct-sounding words, but take the necessary actions to stop bullying before it flourishes.
