Gives you great basics for implementing raw food meals
By Leanne
I've become interested in raw foods ever since I took a raw foods class with Diana Stobo about eight months ago, so I'm definitely a newbie when it comes to raw foods. I own about six or seven raw cookbooks, and was interested in this one since it covers the basics "for dummies" like myself.

I do have to say that I was a bit worried about ordering it as part of the Vine program, since most of the previous five-star reviews for this book are a little suspect. If you look carefully at the reviews written before today's date (1-27-13) by clicking on the "See all my reviews" link, you'll notice that many of the review writers have this book as their only reviewed item. (Planted reviews??? Hmm . . . .) Nevertheless, it's a very good resource for raw newbies, and let me explain why.

The other raw cookbooks (or should it be "un-cookbooks" ;-) ) I have do start with nutritional information about the benefits of a raw lifestyle, so the opening chapters of this book are similar in scope to other raw food books out there. What sets this one apart as a great resource for newbies, however, are a few things.

Chapter 4 of this book lays out a month-long raw meal plan that is really useful in terms of planning your meals. It even includes the Food Prep needed for each day as a separate call-out item, so it's easy to figure out what to do. The only thing that would have made this better would have been to have included the page numbers of the recipes.

Another nice feature is the chapter on eating out. It gives a lot of good pointers about what to pick when you go to a restaurant and how to order meals that will work with a raw diet.

The other main strength of this book is that it covers a nice variety of raw foods, including cheeses, nut mylks, entrees, snacks, and desserts. I've made a few of the recipes so far, and all have been very good. Having a food processor and high-speed blender will make it easier to make most of the recipes, but only a handful call for a dehydrator.

The recipes are also nicely broken down, with clear indications of the prep time, the waiting time, and the number of servings. There is also nutritional information given for each item.

For many of the recipes, there is also a cute drawing with tips for things like how to cute a pineapple, use a juicer, or open a coconut.

Also, like with many other raw cookbooks, many of the recipes rely on nuts, so just be aware of that if you have a nut allergy.

I only wish that this had photos since photos always inspire me when it comes to cookbooks, but before I even ordered it I knew that it probably wouldn't have any photos since the For Dummies series is usually printed with black and white ink, and no color. Despite the lack of photos, the recipes themselves have encouraged me to try them, and I've been very satisfied with what I've made so far!

Comprehensive, User-Friendly, Creative
By Dee Long
We love the creativity of the more than 100 recipes in this guidebook and the great suggestions for building a kitchen inventory that will focus more on raw food dishes. The menu planning section is very helpful for ways to start incorporating raw foods into daily menus and we especially enjoyed the section on "Snacks and Nutritious Nibbles" that are much more inspired than anything purchased in a package. If your New Year's resolution was to eat healthier, "Raw Food for Dummies" gets you started in the right direction to make that happen!

The Benefits Of A Raw Diet
By J. A. Bell
I think the best thing about "Raw Food for Dummies" is the simple, direct prose that is organized in chapters of information that are grouped into "Parts." If you're new to raw foods and you want a book to "kick off" your knowledge base, this is a good book to start with. If you're already a raw foods "pro," this book has a large section devoted to recipes that might spice up your current repertoire.

In Chapter One, it is suggested that "you don't need to eat all raw food all the time to enjoy the health benefits of the raw lifestyle...some aim for an 80/20 split." This is a good suggestion for people who are new to a raw foods diet. You cannot get Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D from one a hundred percent raw foods diet. (This book does address this.) You will also need a more in-depth knowledge of combining foods to get a "complete protein" than this book provides.

Chapter One also states, "enzymes in raw foods are best preserved by keeping the food's temperature below 118 degrees." A food dehydrator is required for some of the recipes, and the recommended temperature setting is above 118 for a few of those recipes.

There is a helpful section of sample menus for the "First 31 Days of Raw Food."

Part V: The Part of Tens features "Ten Reasons to Go Raw," and "Ten Foods Best Eaten Raw."

The Appendix has a metric conversion guide, and as with all of the "For Dummies" books, there are amusing cartoons by Rich Tennant throughout.

Overall, I like this guide to eating raw foods.
